That really works well, A tip I was given and I have used it to great effect, whilst the glue is still tacky get the vacuum cleaner and put a sock over the end of the nozzle, then go as close as you dare to the static grass and it helps it stand on end, plus collects the grass not stuck down in a handy little sock.

John Courtneidge good point, for me if I am modelling to perfection and never actually playing as a consequence then I’ve got the balance wrong. My problem was that having been to art college and with 30 years of professional and hobby engagement in art and modelling I could achieve near perfection, but one day I realised that meant I rarely played with anything!

I use a home made static grass applicator made from and electronic fly swat and a large tea strainer which cost all of about $25A to make but if you want to avoid the shocks, then try the Noch Static Grass puff bottle - it does a pretty good job. When I used to use the puffer bottle I would also blow up a balloon, rub it on my hair to build up a charge then hold it close to the freshly glued grass to help it stand up - best to try this part before glue sets (this is also a good way to pick up stray grass fibres).

@@BudgetModelRailways If you can, one good example of alpine prairies is the Col du Lautaret in summer, on the road from Bourg d'Oisans to Briançon. It's worth the travel, you even have a coach which runs on the right road, if you don't want to travel by car : www.transdevdauphine.com/en . Good Morning Doug and Mike,thats a really good tip,what length of grass are you using? I would be happy with that look.Ive watched a fair few videos about static grass,but most use the layering spray and an expensive electric shaker system,when in fact the look you have got there looks plenty good enough to me.But as we all know to have this model railway interest and hobby you are supposed to have a endless supply of money ;) Anyway thanks for sharing such a great tip and video.

We have a few videos on this. You can buy an applicator £25-60 or get an empty drinks bottle, punch some holes in the lid and shake it like mad for a couple of minutes, up end it and shake over the layout. That's what we do now

sorta works, but a static applicater is far superior. I would suggest saving ones money to buy an applicator. and doing the job right. Detail is everything in this hobby.

No its not, enjoying yourself is the most important thing. Its the obbsesional hunt for detail perfection thats pushed prices through the roof. Many continental layouts make extensive use of grass mats which are another quick cheap solution.
@stmichaelshill7421
5 жыл бұрын
While I agree spending money isn't for everyone - I still think you could have done it right and used a homemade applicator. They are cheap online, and you can build your own for next to nothing. Whilst your results look OK, it's not quite static grass. One other thing I think this channel is really missing is DCC. I know you've said in the past that this is expensive, but it just isn't. You can pick up a Lais DCC chip for under £10, hardwire VERY easily to an old Hornby or Lima loco and pick up a second hand controller for no more than an analogue one and you're away. It's what lots of youngsters want from the hobby and it'd be good to see you promote that as part of a budget model railway.
@125sloth

Exactly right. We have been ripped off for years due to the "purists" who measure everything to the last millimetre, demanding manufacturers look after them. The same people who criticize model cars on layouts etc. saying they are not the perfect scale. Don't get me wrong, I can be pedantic where necessary, but the hobby is more about the fun. Some people say matchbox cars for example, are not suitable for ho/00 gauge as they are the wrong scale. Not necessarily, it depends where they are placed on a layout, in fact some matchbox series are actually the exact scale. However enjoying the hobby without being so immersed in every little detail is the way to go. Even at exhibitions you see brilliant layouts that do not have every conceivable detail. I do like detail to a point, but obsession can be counter-productive.
@jimtedesco
5 жыл бұрын
If your obsessed with anything, it can be a problem. I was merely referring to making a more realistic layout. I like to make my layout look realistic. For myself and apparently many others in this hobby detailing our layouts is fun.@@gregpotter6957
