I love nature, have planted thousands of trees, don't litter, pick up garbage, etc. but some of these "protective measures" go a little too far. In my opinion. Nature occurs naturally, humans walking on grass cannot be more natural.

Hi John, The grass of concern is Marram grass. It’s the long (2-3ft) beach grass you see growing on the dunes. It keeps the dune stable and prevents erosion. When people walk on it, it can kill the grass and eventually cause the dune to erode. It’s important we keep on designated trails in order to keep our dunes healthy. Additionally, in some areas, like West Beach, we have some federally endangered plants that scientists at the national park are working to preserve and restore. We don’t want people trampling plants like those either! Let us know if you have any other questions!
