Girls... green primer/colour correction was god send! I got my makeup professionally done and the artist recommended green primer (which I thought was weird since I don't have redness in my face), a good medium/full coverage foundation with a good soothing moisturiser (my skin and makeup get splotchy and patchy). The only thing that was red was my chest where makeup wasn't covering.

"Hey man, we should go out for a drink sometime!" Those words already lay the friendship trap for me in my daily life. Choosing to drink or not drink at all should be a choice we can all make without any health-related repurcussions! While living in a dominantly drink-bonding culture, having this defect is like being defaulted to be socially excluded from your peers and colleagues. It baffles me to find out that this topic isn't well known to the public, or not well known enough! If there was some sort of vaccine that I can receive that would make me immune to turning red and hearing my own heart beating so aggressively from drinking alcohol, I'd take it in a heartbeat. Sorry for the rant. This is something I've also been struggling with throughout my life, so far, and it's been tough.

So glad you took the time to express this, because a lot of people, including ourselves, feel this way. Which is why we made this video to give any little bit of help that we can. Since this topic isn't as well known by the public as we would hope, there isn't too much available support so feel free to rant on this channel lol. Apparently there is some cutting edge medicine coming out to help people with peanut allergy... this could foreshadow science in our favor in the future, but unfortunately for now we have to stay strong.

I’m no big drinker so I’m not entirely sure if it’s just my lack of alcohol tolerance or if it’s more than just a flush and may possibly be an allergic reaction. When I drink alcohol, I don’t flush..I turn tomato red. All over. And then I start to heat up, and sweat, and my heart starts to beat really fast which causes me to get super anxious. Then I begin to feel super nauseous, it’s like I skipped the “fun” part (as in being drunk) and I go straight to the worst part. It’s absolutely terrible and I don’t know what to do :(

My mom is Filipino with Japanese and Chinese ancestry, and I am half Filipino half European American . My mom and me both get the Asian Glow after drinking alcohol. I remember one time when I was younger I was at one of my mom's Filipino friends house in Stockton, Georgia and my friend and me drank some wine coolers, that I thought were juice, or what looked like juice. After I drank some of it, not even the whole bottle, I felt dizzy and I had a headache, and I felt like I was out of it. I didn't feel well either, and I thought there was something wrong with me. There was another time I was at a friend's house and I drank 1 to 2 shots of Kahlua with milk in it, which was btw the way tasted very good, but when I got home I felt dizzy and I had another headache, and like last time I did not feel well. At the time I didn't know that Asian Glow/Asian Flush was, but when my 23andME health results and my Tellmegen health results showed that both my mom and me have a gene for Asian Glow/Asian Flush, it then now made sense to me. Since then, I have stayed away from alcohol completely. What is odd is that my brother doesn't flush when he drinks, but I guess he didn't inherit the Asian Glow/Asian Flush gene from my mom the way I did. Is it possible that my brother did not inherit the Asian Flush gene from my mom the way I did? And if not, how come he doesn't get it?
@KoiAcademy

Haha thanks for the story it takes us back to our days too. Its crazy how even if you are less than half the gene shows through even European ancestry as I have seen. @@KoiAcademy Yeah, I stay away from alcohol completely b/c I don't want to get esophageal cancer. I did a health dna test from dnaconsultants.com one time and it says I'm at risk of prone to getting esophageal cancer and gastric cancer based on me being half Asian b/c I was told some countries in Asia like Japan and even Philippines have a high risk for those cancers. So I don't smoke or do drink b/c I don't want to die from cancer, especially being at a young age. Which is odd, b/c I suffer from Bipolar Disorder and I take Latuda to treat my mental disease, and before I was on medication, I would get into mood swings, and I did not care if I die or how I will die and I always thought of hurting myself, but now that I'm taking my medication for my Bipolar Disorder, I don't want to die at all especially from cancer. The fact that esophageal cancer is a real thing for people with Asian Glow, means no alcohol for me! lol!

Zemlyaklomn hello and I’m so sorry to hear all this trouble you have to go through 😔. I do not know why you are having this reaction. It is possible that some of your tests may be falsely negative or inaccurate. It is possible that you have the flush reaction yet your body does not test positive for the enzyme deficiency. Maybe when you drink alcohol, see if you can prevent the redness by taking allergy medicine before you drink (Famotidine and diphenhydramine) if these medicines help stop your redness, then maybe you have allergy to alcohol... the best thing to do is not easy, and that is to stop drinking alcohol because your body is prone to more cancer if you have alcohol flush disease. Hope this helps and good luck!

Mike and Matty As far as I know asian flush is a congenital disease. And I have this problem appeared only in 27 years. I've watched a lot of videos and my symptoms are not much different from classic asian flush. It's not just my face and body that turns red, it's my individual pimples and scars. We have gathered our community in Russia, at least 100 people with similar symptoms. And all this problem did not appear from birth. We are also concerned about the sharp taste of metal, I have not heard such a symptom in asian flush. I can drink 1 time a week without allergies in 80% of cases. But if you drink 2 days in a row, the Allergy appears often. We tried to drink together with the drug Ranitidine, some of it helps, some do not, it helps me 50/50. Ps living in Russia and not to drink vodka too associale))

@j01150126

Asian glow is due to ALDH2 enzyme deficiency. This deficiency means our livers cannot break down acetaldehyde from not only alcohol but any foods high in acetaldehyde and of course synthetic acetaldehydes from chemicals. Ground Coffee is high in acetaldehyde and you might notice ulcers or a sour stomach when drinking coffee, decaf or caffinated doesn't matter. You might not turn red but it's definitely not good for you. A lot of fermented items can also be bad for us. There is not a lot of data out there but it is searchable on Google. This deficiency shouldn't be taken lightly if you are health conscious.

My mom and brother can drink without feeling drunk. I also drink without feeling drunk but after just 1 brew my face, neck and chest get sooooo blotchy. While my mom and brother are a phenomenon on their own, I've got a wicked case of alcohol intolerance with a sprinkle of phenomenon. Tiz weird.

If I prevent Asian Glow by drinking Kale Vodka for example, will that still increase my risk for Eesophageal cancer as much as drinking normal vodka would do?
@KoiAcademy
4 жыл бұрын
Remy ! Hey Remy great question, yes the alcohols that we drink break down into acetaldehyde which is the carcinogen that increases our risk for cancer (any kind of cancer). Having the genes makes you more susceptible to esophageal cancer specifically, but kale vodka would still break down into alcohol byproducts. Hope that helps!

How high is your alcohol tolerance regardless of the flush? How much can you 2 Mike and Matty respectively drink before getting hangover like symptoms(headache, nausea etc)? I am really curious to know. How would I know whether one I am a homozygote or heterozygote for aldh2 lys? I mean I definitely have the flush just dunno if it's the double flush so to speak

Can I take antihistamines every once in a while? I drink only occasionally and I don’t like to drink too much. So would it be okay?
@KoiAcademy
4 жыл бұрын
James M hey James thank you so much for watching! Taking antihistamines may cause you to drink more than you should or drink more than your body can handle without you knowing it. With that being said, be cognizant of your decisions, as using antihistamines infrequently every once in a while will probably be ok. Please check out our Pepcid video or our Zantac video in the playlist for a more detailed discussion!

I have this really bad for around 30 years - not just a red flush either. It painful and I sometimes have difficulty breathing. I look like I have the plague or something. Happens with all types of alcoholic drink, then randomly not at all. Sometimes, if i get through the first couple of drinks then it disappears. I think it may be stress related too. I seem to get it worse when I'm feeling a bit stressed or anxious, which kind of creates a vicious circle.

Thank you so much Michael. I really enjoy your effort trying to help people with this struggle. The thing that bothers me the most is not the lack of confidence when being sober, but the exclution from the group. It is so frustrating to not be able to play drinking games and to have those special drunk conversations. I do not drink at all anymore, since I'm aware of the consequences. As a teenager, it's tough to decide whether this is a good decision, especially considering that you are only young once. Anyways, thanks a lot again for your effort :) Do you think that there will be a solution in the future for this?
@KoiAcademy
4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the comment, and yes it is a true struggle for many people, sorry to hear about all the frustration you've been having. I've met many patients who have lived all their life never drinking alcohol, and they tend to live longer. But yes I understand that alcohol is a culture that can definitely involve exclusion and even peer pressure. I do not know if there will be a good solution for this, but there are many different companies creating supplements that even today don't have strong enough evidence or research.
