If you strive to get better than you can help others strive to get better. When others become better than you, then all it means is that you have more to learn and that’s exciting

We watch this at the beginning of the soccer season and when Abby said “the reality is” all the returners started laughing because our coaches say it all the time and we were all like “it’s spreading”

This is a very well presented talk. I recently did on competition in education. I am not a pro-competition guy but you have some very good points. There is much to discuss on this. Being competitive to me is not something that can be accepted simply. It’s like the side effects of antibiotics. People may keep taking it even under a doctor’s prescription but would not accept that there is a limit to it. And, when that limit does arrive - it arrives when even big guns end up at the other spectrum of age and capacity - how that serves them without having gone through the training into self knowledge. Bruce Li is a great example and he did it well as a competing as well as self seeking legend. There is much to learn and exceptions won’t suffice the discussion. Self seeking is what would help actual competing (I would rather use, playing) without comparison. Thank you.

except the only thing standing in between me and claiming success is other people's interference. not to say help is categorically unwanted, just that most people do not intend to help but actively try to hinder, or if they do try to help they are so incompetent at it that they make matters worse. i've been on both sides of that experience too, i myself have hindered and incompetently helped others.

So when your feeling lazy use others got it, come on now you guys know the rule there are no rules you absolutely dont need anyone as motivation, there is probably a universal law that benefits the other person over you if you use them as motivation, you know what...it is called the law of compensation.

Competition in sports is fine because it's almost entirely in public view. But the less public our behaviors are the more likely we are to compromise on what's ethical and legal, especially in capitalism. Those are key words, "healthy" and "rivalry". Collaboration works best for large, broad and long term problem-solving.

How about saying thinking, ...Joe's your competition, "Hey Joe, give me your best shot, give me something to shoot for". Is the a healthy thought? You're wanting Joe to do his best and you are saying it will that his best effort to outperform you. Are you not giving your competitor positive encouragement?

Good talk but "Abby Wambach" is best soccer player of all time?! How can you say that when high school boys are destroying women's pro soccer team? Again, good talk, but try to stay objective rather than pick samples that pander to PC culture. Else your talk will become stale as quickly as political trends come and go.
