Spot on! Even before a painting has had time to settle a bit, I feel compelled dibble dabble and start adding too many textural elements Granulation fluid, salt, scratching, splattering till it’s a crazy mess! I’ve started to paint first thing in the morning when my mind is uncluttered and when the painting feels almost done I walk away. A few hours later I realize the painting has completed itself 😉

"the painting has completed itself" - I love that perspective! Slowing down and taking frequent breaks has been really powerful for my ability to recognize when a painting is working or not. So often they really do complete themselves in that space of time!

This spoke to me! I've always had the "limiting belief" that if the painting didn't take a long time to complete, it must not be good or a "real" painting. Time to get over that!

so often a painting might take 5 or 10 minutes to paint, but it's the hours invested in previous versions that really make it a success and work out the problems. You know how much I like to try out different versions!

Hi Angela, I just found your channel. I am relatively new to watercolor and still not pleased with my work. I really appreciate your videos. Thank you, from Ladner 'BC:)'

Also resist the urge to go back & “fix” it while in the danger stage (if I just go back really fast) know can fix this spot (then just made it worse)! Often less is more!

I'm an ESTJ so anytime I pick watercolors to paint with I find myself losing my mind because something random like humidity making things dry too fast or accidentally dripping paint where there's supposed to be light spots. Or I find myself not being able to follow my studies that I did before. Etc.😄 I've tossed the word "overwork" from my painting vocabulary because all it does is make me worry and I stop when I get *any* form of what I wanted. I usually give my paintings away to people who don't know any better and are too busy being grateful to judge (which is great for when I feel like I made a total mess of a painting, haha!). In the end, watercolors help temper the side of me that wants everything to go as planned.

Awesome Angela. I lived these tips. Kind of laughed when you talked about finishing a painting in 5 minutes. Lol. I am lucky if I finish one in a hour, or a day. 🤣😂

One thing we've been talking about in our workshop a lot this week is that how long a painting takes is no determiner of its value! We all work at different speeds, but I'm more concerned with recognizing a painting's potential - or genius - before I keep going beyond where it needed to go.
