🤔 I got into the habbit of bringing a small backpack with a couple of books, a notebook, my journal and some index cards. I have my “writings tools” with me and depending on my mood, I mind read, write, take notes, or just stare into space while drinking coffee. But in that backpack, I’m covered.

Nice. I have to travel a bit lighter working in construction. I use a 3 x 5 notebook, keep a novel or other book in my lunch box and I even have a "pocket sized sketchbook" and felt tip pen in there too. It's made my lunch breaks more rewarding and helps me retain the podcasts I listen to at work....also I feel more clear headed and attentive during the work itself. I don't have a commonplace book yet. But I asked for a leather folio for my upcoming birthday that will also fit in my lunch box, too. One day at a time

I recently started dedicating about 30 minutes every day to sitting in silence and doing nothing. Usually, after I finish work. I call it A Boring Session. Not only after 30 minutes I feel rested and often motivated to do something productive, I also remember many things that popped in my head at some point, something I wanted to do/check/look at, but that faded from my consciousness. Sometimes I reach some sort of meditative state where I don't notice time and spend more than an hour just sitting in the silence. It feels great.

Make sure you only watch things related to your study account so the algorithm only show stuff related to your study. I've recently began to use some social media on my computer which has helped me tremendously in cutting down all social media use. I’ve tried to delete the apps off my phone but it’s so easy to just download them (sometimes hours later after I’ve deleted them) so I needed something different. During night time feeds with my daughter, to stay awake, instead of going straight to Instagram or Facebook, I started a Bible study plan on the Bible app.. such a better use of my time! I may also try to download a book on my phone to read for another option. Great video as always. Keep up the great work!

🤔 Thank you for these videos, I have been having a lot of issues with getting rid of social media for many years. And this approach is spot on, an addiction needs to be replaced with an activity that instead helps you in your life. I also must admit I have personal problems which I have drowned through social media usage, as escapism or avoidance. I have always had this habit of writing things on notebooks but I never know what to write "on the go". I am not a proper philosopher, I just think things and cannot, nor have the time to think deeply about things I wish I could. So I only have catch all ideas notebook. Many of the other ideas I write down are on my phone apps. I will go ahead and buy a portable notebook, thank you so much!

My method of choice is simply to “addiction hop”. Short form videos to KZitem mini series, then eventually video essays. Next comes webcomics (a medium of choice for me) which bleeds into fantasy novels. That is one way to build back up to reading. This does however revolve around the idea of constant consumption. Reading is only good so long as you are always reading type beat. Now I’ve managed to find some books that are good enough that I read them for 15 minutes to an hour but can still put them down and return to them later. This is all a long winded an round about way of saying temperance takes time and you need to find what works for you. Choose the most sustainable path so that you can achieve longer term goals. Remember, progress isn’t linear and it’s okay if you fall back on old habits ;)

🤔 Definitely some good suggestions there. I had already scaled back my social media years ago, deleting my Facebook due to the constant political and toxic content, so I have only had IG for the last 5-8 years. I did find it was best for me to just not have it on my phone, so that scrolling is not a problem. As with some of the other comments, i agree that KZitem is where i do my "scrolling". It has gotten somewhat better with my newish job, which does not allow me to bring my phone inside the facility. I also am not allowed to bring books in though, so that is a bummer. Trying to be more intentional about reading though, so will be utilizing some of ur suggestions.

Combine the notetaking with social media: Whenever you hear something valuable or learn something worthwhile while scrolling, take some time to note it down and think about it. I usually have a reason to come back to it tho & the hardest part is getting back to it after, it gives me huge anxiety and feels so overwhelming until I adjust a bit! I’m considering removing instagram completely, deleting the account. Tiktok is a lot more valuable for me rn, but i hate the feeling of being sucked in & spending more time on it than a few minutes. So for now i just download it monthly & scroll for an hour & delete again. I’m still trying to find a way to receive & give value online in moderation while also keeping my time and peace. 🤔 One thing I need to realize (beyond cognitively) is that KZitem IS social media. I don't spend much time on FB, IG, X, Reddit, or Tumblr, but I love soaking in knowledge or watching people build or make things. I feel like that *partially* meets the needs of learning from others, but only if I'm very careful about what I consume and why I consume it. Through watching more and more of your content, for instance, I'm getting better at capturing the ideas and wisdoms of others - that's valuable above and beyond simple enjoyment. (Ditto Adam Savage, who I find to be one of the most compelling philosophers on KZitem - his philosophical arena is very tactile and mechanical, which my brain structure needs). But it would likely be less fun, but more profitable, to do so by reading. It seems weird to say, but sometimes for me, with the scrolling addiction, reading seems to require an act of bravery. Which is horrifying, since I plowed through 4-5 books a week as a kid.

🤔 Great Video. But Maintaining so many books at the same time can be a headache. Isn't it possible to maintain all the stuff within one single journal by dedicating some sections for our desired goals or thoughts?

Totally! I just like compartmentalizing and when I go to review it helps me get in the right head space. Cal Newport talks about this too. Having it all in one spot stresses me out. But I can imagine others being stressed by having so many spots haha

🤔 Hi Parker, thanks for this video. I really like the idea of having a notebook to encourage intentional thought about a previously formed idea. However, my mind tends to wander and sometimes I think that I'd like to pursue a thought for longer. I wondered whether you've come across a method for doing this - a set of questions to work through, or some other method to practice the discipline of sustained thought. Cheers!

Sometimes I'll do a mind dump and just write out all the thoughts that come to me. This signals to myself that I'm not going to forget what's up there so I can relax and focus on one thought now. Also, since I write down my thoughts, I can return at a later time when I'm able to be more focused and I can work them through then

🤔 my tipp for yall is not to bring your phone to the toilet. this one is really hard, because its fucking boring. but it kinda trains your brain to be more okay with silence and boredom. So not bringing your phone with you to the toilet actually reduces the urge to whip out your phone in other situations. And thus you will scroll less Also I actually always have a book in my backpack and read it lol My last book was about epigenetics, the next one is about AI lol

Good tips. I enjoy them all. However, I got distracted by heretics of dune. So far, I’ve read the first three, Im gonna read the fourth. Do I go on to #5 and #6 or call it good with God Emperor?
