Got my license in june, and I've been driving almost daily for the last 3 months. Hills still scare the crap out of me. But I'm so much better today than I was 2 months ago. Can't remember the last time I stalled uphill. It's all about practice, don't give up. And don't expect to get good in a day. If you're getting frustrated, give yourself 1 day off from driving, and try the next day. Stress does not help. Good luck, everyone.

My parents let me drive our car down a very steep hill fairly regularly (I'm trying to get in as much driving time as I can before I start lessons, I can't wait!), and it's never smooth. I'm only in first gear so I press the clutch in at the same time as braking, so the car accelerates for a short distance before the brakes grab and stop the car, and that always ends in a jerk as well. This is extremely helpful, thank you.

Thank u for the lesson. In an uphill, i use the same method where there is no cars behind me. If there is a car, then i make sure to use brakes to signal to driver that i am slowing (sometimes drivers are distracted and this is their fault, but i am scared that they came to me with full speed...) In a downhill, when i am about 20 km/h, i put it in neutral and start to touch the brake a little bit to make smooth stop (happy that i found u used almost the same). My dad tough me that in a normal situations use brake smoothly to make safe stop and to signal to cars behind u.
@RusNad
2 жыл бұрын
Putting it in neutral that early, you lose engine braking which is very useful downhill as it reduces how much you need to brake to slow down. I also use the clutch down while braking instead of neutral. It's the same thing but much easier to get going if for example the queue starts moving again and you don't need to stop completely anymore.

These are all the things I started doing even before I had my driver's license. I thought it to be so natural and normal.. These are just the basics.. Wait until you've driven a beat up gearbox that needs special care when shifting gears or a clutch that has just that bit of give.. Or a steering column that pulls one way.. or brakes that have an old master cylinder.. Kids these days and their hardships of stopping the car without giving a concussion to everyone.. there's so much more to driving than that.

I think it is indeed practically impossible to brake the car smoothly on a steep downhill due to the difference between static and kinetic coefficients of friction.

It is possible. But not practical. It does depend on the car also, some brakes are easier than others.

When coming downhill can we select a lower gear and then brake progressively and putting the car to neutral after we have completely stopped? The lower helps in controlling the speed of the car and there won't be any need to press the clutch for a longer duration.

question about changing gears - ive heard some instructors say that u have to pause in neutral because then u got a better rev match or something like that, like when u shift from 3rd to 4th, ud pause for a second in neutral, then shift to 4th. does it matter if u pause in neutral or shift directly? whats the difference and from where this ,,pausing in neutral,, thing came?

It doesn't matter in a modern car because they all have synchromesh gears. Pre 1970s you had to worry about that.

@@ConquerDriving Thank you Richard. Makes sense . Richard, I have another question, little related; in an automatic car, when u hold the foot brake , at a stop point, the car is in gear one I presume. How is it designed that the clutch doesn't wear out from struggling against the brake . Would it not be same mechanics as holding a manual car in gear one , at clutch point, while the brakes are applied. Thanks

Slowly move out so it is safe, if you are not in the way when you see someone coming you need to stop but if you are in the way you need to continue as staying in front of them won't help. The key is to move forward slowly so traffic you can't see has time to react to you. Like 1-2mph slowly.
