Wow! I had purchased my belacan (Thai brand) from Shopee. I find that this type of belacan is much nicer for cooking or sambal. Actually Penang has good belacan too. If I go back there I will definitely buy the belacan and the hair Koh (for laksa).

@@dpinvogue: Hi ! Honestly I do not know. I would love to try. Perhaps If I may be allowed to presume that each place has it's own unique flavour. As of now I know Penang's belacan & Thailand's belacan totally taste different slightly. The color and flavor is also different. Perhaps Malacca's belacan might resemble Penang a bit but I am still confident it will hold it's own identity. With C19 around, chances of adventures (food and anything related to it) is totally out. Do let us know if you had the chance to try Malacca's belacan. Cheers!

Hi!, Thanks for your video. I also go sometimes to Thailand. Which market do you buy from? Thank you.

Hi Anindya Roy, thank you for the question 😄 I bought this ingredient from Betong (which is a Thailand-Malaysia border town). Actually, this shrimp paste can be bought from any wet market in Thailand, sold together with the dried ingredients (ie. dried chillies, dried prawns, dried fish). This shrimp paste as no brand, as it is usually sold loose and the seller will weigh the shrimp paste according to the customer's request 😄 Hope this helps!

What market in Bangkok would you recommend buying this shrimp paste?

Hi LegendaryEats. Any wet morning market you will find the shop that is selling dried fish or preserved food and they should have this kind of belecan showcase like a small mountain in the basin. Alternatively you can also get it from the supermarket where the belacan is already prepacked, it's more convenience to bring home and no smell. I hope this helps. Thank you for the comment 😀😀

Hi LegendaryEats. I bought it from the morning market in Betong, Yala. That was in 2019 and today the belacan is still fresh in the freezer and will last as long as I finished it up. Thank you for the comment 😀

Hi Pretty Catmint, Yes, it's a lot of belacan. With this amount It can last me for a long time too but not a life time 😂😂. Luckily me that I bought a lot from my last trip. It is so uncertain now, when will be my next visit to Thailand with the current situation of the pandemic. Thanks for the comment.
