Simple trick to store the herbs such as cilantro, parsley, dill, chives, basil, and mint. No waste, plastic-free, and natural way!
Has this ever happened to you?!
⠀
When you decide to have pasta with basil and cherry tomatoes for dinner, have already prepared everything, get into the refrigerator for the basil, and find it turned irreparably black. 😭
⠀
Or this moody cilantro! For some reason, I expect it to live as long as parsley in my refrigerator. But it’s getting slimy and, again, I have to throw it away.
⠀
But parsley also does not live up to expectations! Ok, it lives longer, but, it often turns yellow. Sigh. 😩
⠀
The articles all over the internet are saying to store herbs wrapped in a damp paper towel. Or place them in a glass of water and cover them loosely with a plastic bag. I either do not like the first method because of the waste of paper towels. Nor the second one as I’m (still) banning plastic bags in my kitchen.
⠀
(I dream of getting rid of plastic in the kitchen once and for all. But in actual life after a year and a half of my struggle, it seems a bit more difficult to do than I thought initially. Although my kitchen is not zero plastic, I try not to store produce in plastic in my refrigerator.)
⠀
So this is the best way to store herbs in the fridge:
1. Place the herbs in a jar of water;
2. Loosely cover it with a damp linen cloth or linen bag;
3. Store inside the door of your fridge.
4. Change the water and moist the cloth every couple of days to keep the greens fresh.
⠀
In the video, you can see that I’m using the linen plant milk bag for a bunch of cilantro. And I’ve covered chives, parsley, and dill with the pieces of linen cloth. 🙌
⠀
Seriously, that’s the most natural, simple (and beautiful) method to keep herbs in the fridge. They last for up to three weeks.
⠀
P.S. Basil is an exception to this rule - it should be left out on a counter at room temperature because it’s sensitive to the cold. And your fridge will make them turn black. As for the mint, I also store it on the counter, not in the fridge. Just keep the stems trimmed and place in a jar of water.
