Ingenious straightening contraption there Andy! I’ve cracked one myself with too much heat. Have a plan to repair it but that made my decision to get a steamer. Watching the older gentleman stick maker (Dave) using a wallpaper steamer will be the way I’d like to go. Thanks for the education!

Definitely safer a wallpaper steamer.I use this method simply cause I got wood in abundance. The heat gun bending jack set up is a variation that many use on line.

Excellent idea!! For how long do you apply the heat to the section that you want to bend? Can you give me an idea about how hot is the temperature of the air (max intensity, medium, low)? I ask all that because the heatgun method is tricky. I have tried to bend some as branches (max 1 inch in diameter) and I never seem to get the sweet spot. It ends up either splitting or not bending. Best regards.

Hi, the heat gun method is hard to guarantee results. I have lost some stunning pieces of wood myself. I usually rotate the wood and gently warm the area by moving direct heat up and down the area. Once I have heat in the wood I slowly direct the gun at the chosen bend and bring temperature of wood up further. I have no actual temperature guidelines and it's really experience. I have only been able to get bends out but never so far get a full curve. Steam on the other hand allows me to bend wood double , As a rule you should never hear the bark making popping noises or smell bark cooking off .All the best with your crafting and thanks for watching. Andy.

I straighten older recurve bows with heating pads and weights to slightly bend past the needed result. Once I see the the actual bend occur I turn off the heating pad and allow the bow to cool. It might work on sticks for very difficult bends.
