Enjoyed your video. Thanks, it answered a lot of questions I had about steam straightening hiking sticks. The best thing is that you do it with very inexpensive and easy to acquire items, most of which i already have on hand.. Please keep up the good work. Would be a longer comment but I have a fire to build and sticks to straighten.

Thanks for watching, I do find it almost therapeutic straightening this way . A fire, coffee and enjoying the day slip away while you achieve something. All the best, Andy.

Thanks for showing your steaming setup. For the most part, I tweak sticks straight as they dry (I only cut around twenty a year, so popping out to the shed and tweaking them every few weeks isn't a problem!) but if I do have any that escape my attention then I use the good old paint stripper. The paint stripper works, but I have had more than a ew instances of scorching pretty bark, so setting up a steam system is next on my list. Thanks again

Hi,This is about as crude and basic a steam set up as it can get. It does come with safety issues I have described but it will heat wood up enough for straightening. That's interesting how you are straightening tweaking over time. That has inspired me to have a go with a few pieces of wood using your method. Thanks for watching, Andy.

@@hiddenvalleyfootpaths2561 My 'tweak as they dry' method does work well, and I'm probably wrong but I always feel that doing it without applying heat could lead to a stronger stick... possibly maybe!

@ExplorerJust HI, I believe your theory could hold some truth.I do know some stick makers tie off saplings in desirable shapes then leave to grow like that till harvest season. Thanks for watching, Andy.

Hi.None of the materials are correct or safe for this setup up that i was using. It was something I had knocked up out of stuff lying around the shed. Yes I managed to produce steam and a method to straighten sticks, but as I said, it was dangerous and needs a lot of care to use.I do not recommend you copy this out safety reasons. I would look online how to build a more professional setup .This is not a recommended how to do, but a look how I did things out of desperation. I have moved over to electricity now also.. Thanks for watching. Andy.

Nice spot to enjoy the day straightening sticks ! I was wondering if this works for any type of wood, I got a few blackthorn and heat gun does not work so easily … thanks for the video !

Hi, I still occasionally use a heat gun but I have to admit steam straightening is a superior quality method. I don't do much blackthorn but for me steam has worked. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy. Oh I do remember a famous youtube Irish stick maker that does not recommend steam for black thorn though......As I said I had no problems but he's the professional in regards to blackthorn. Thanks for watching Andy.

@@hiddenvalleyfootpaths2561 Thanks for your answer which I saw only now lol ! Actually I had an answer also from Irish stick maker explaining that you don’t want to put back moisture into a seasoned blackthorn stick … however I don’t think that the moisture which took 2 years to go out will go back in it within 2 hours steam heating… I think the steam will just transmit evenly its heat to the wood at heart, but not penetrate the wood, just heat exchange … everyone has their habits and way of doing things and I thing steam may be a bit more of a demanding process that’s why some people will not use it and that’s all … if the stick has a good diameter, I think the heat gun can’t really heat it at heart … but the steam will probably do it … In short, I will try it and let you know ! Thanks again ☺️👍

finally the video i have been looking for! we have a bunch of applewood and I need a stick, but all the pieces are wibbly wobbly and my woodworking knowledge is 0. I suspect I will end up using a stock pot and bin liner to steam my stick since I'm making exactly one, but if i catch the bug i can always come back here to make myself a steam chamber

Seems like sitting there, contemplating life, keeping the fire going, straightening sticks and drinking coffee is a fine way to spend the day. Just entering into retirement, I’m hoping to have many days just like that! Great video! Please dedicate a video on the stick straightening machine.

Hi, all my materials are not designed and intended for the heat and steam process and are dangerous in operation as stated in this video. The steam pipe chamber was drainage pipe. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.

if you harvest in winter-or early spring they crack alot less when drying and a whole lot faster. collecting juniper in summer it will most likely split so bad its better to use as belly laminate for a selfbow rather than a walking stick or spear, contraty to harvesting in winter where splitting is minimal

Hi, as I mentioned, nothing is recommended for this operation as its not designed for this task .Its Al home made, so to be honest, I feel uncomfortable recommending anything for no other reason than safety. I guess you would call it hill Billy Style. Thanks for watching. Andy.
