Just don’t try this on MDF - or you’re likely to get a pile of wet cardboard. If you have got a dink in a piece of good hardwood, the moisture and iron trick is a great way to get rid of it. Just wet the area with a wet cloth; leave a few minutes and then iron over the cloth at a fairly high heat. It’s amazing how I’ve recovered some pieces where I’ve been dumb enough to mark them. You can thank Kurt who has probably been dead for 30 years for this get-out

Hi Scott Earl, I enjoyed your amazing video. I wish I’d seen it a few weeks ago at the start of my project. I’ve already cut, sealed, and shellacked some 1/8 inch plywood on the concave side. Didn’t seal the other side. The wood naturally straightened out during some damp weather, but as soon as the weather turned dry again, it warped. Don’t want to wet the wood on the shellac side, but is there a way to straighten it out by doing something to the other, the convex side? Would sealing that side help at all?
@scottearlsmithFTC
9 ай бұрын
Thank you for the compliment on the video. I'd suggest shellacking the other side if and when it straightens in damp weather. That way youre going to stabilize the piece. This is why interior doors will have a label on them that says to seal on all sides (top, bottom, sides, front and back). Otherwise moisture can permeate the material. Hope this helps, Scott

I work with luan for art “paint poring .. and I need to flatten it.., I am going to “water board it” 😂 . Then weight it down . After this process is finished and it is flat. Is there a way to seal it the luan before painting? And the finished product will be resin. Well that also hold it from warping
@scottearlsmithFTC

You could try a spray-on shellac or lacquer before the resin. But I would try a sample piece first. I'm not familiar with luan but I did spray some artwork done on a hope chest and it worked well.

What if you don't have access to the concave side? Can you simply heat up the convex side?

Use the same moisturizing process and put weight on it to flatten. Then you'd need to install it so something that is straight permanently. Otherwise it may go back the way it was unfortunately. When I straighten plywood I immediately install it so that it can't return to the warped shape. In future you could try a different grade of plywood. Less warpage.

how would you fix 1/2 inch warped plywood?
@scottearlsmithFTC
3 жыл бұрын
Use the same technique. Moisten the concave side of the plywood and flip over. Probably do it on saw horses outside in the sunshine. The UV rays and heat will do the job. Keep an eye on it periodically. Basically you are expanding the fibres on the concave side, and shrinking the fibres on the convex side of the wood. Plywood warps when different densities of wood are used in the "sandwich" during the manufacturing process.

It will work with some good old-fashioned UV rays. Set the plywood on some saw horses in the sun and give it a try. We still have 6-foot snowbanks and below-zero weather here in Canada, but hopefully you guys are actually having some spring weather in the UK and you can give it a go.

Then pour boiling water on it and use screws to force the bend instead of weights (I have a joist array to screw into). Hopefully it will work. I'll let you know how it went. If I didn't want the piece to be removable, I would have just screwed it to the joists and left it there. No disrespect to the forty years experience but.. you don't mention what the thin plywood looks like 24 hours (or less with 1/2 in or more), much less 48 or more. Let's consider you're not using a full sheet and will be cutting smaller pieces out of the larger sheet as needed. The warped condition will very likely be even worse !!. Reason ?? The cross grain lamination process used to strengthen the plywood is in fact the culprit. Each laminated layer is pulling in the direction of its own "memory" prior to the Glue, Press / Pressure and Heat process used in the manufacturing process. What I've come to understand through my own research is, much like most everything in life, you get what you pay for. If you need flat plywood, skip the BS videos like this. Find a reputable lumber dealer ( not the big box stores) that sells furniture grade "Engineered" wood products. You may spend 10-20% more but you'll avoid hours of watching these rainbow pony videos full of hope and later cursing your wood project and the valuable time you've waisted. Please note; I'm a "do it yourselfer" and Do Not work for, Sponsor or represent Any commercial business. Just wanna help guys like me !!
@napoleanblownafarte91

"No disrespect"? @Mark, your comments would be taken more seriously if you stop mixing "no disrespect" disclaimers that are immediately followed by opinionated "...skip BS video..." bashing statements. This guy is trying to address a problem with techniques/tools at hand, not by going out and simply throwing more money at a project. The challenge is half the fun, so try to be more collaborative in the future. Next time you see a post like this, if/when you anticipate secondary issues (your point is recognized and appreciated), enumerate those anticipations and try speculating about how to address them creatively. Start by anticipation that some people (a) have limited funds and (b) may not live in/near a major metro area where material sourcing is extensive and varied.
