I used cloth diapers on my daughters. I hung them out to dry. I had a man come and knock on my door to say he would drive down my road every day on his way home to see my diapers blowing in the wind every morning. He said it reminded him of when his sons were babies. He commented on how white my diapers were. I always line dried my diapers. I only used the dryer if it was raining or too cold to the point of the diapers freezing on the line.

That bleach soak at the beginning didnt do anything because bleach deactivates in hot water. In the future, use cold for a bleach soak :)

Yes science proves hot water and bleach is just salt water. Need cold water for bleach sanitises, done after soaking and getting them clean. The ratio of bleach to water is also a lot lower than most people think.

When my kids were babies We used cloth diapers. I always put the just used diapers in a bucket of borax water after rinsing out. I washed them with bleach as needed and laundry detergent. They were always super white! Soaking in Borax water really made a difference.

This was weirdly satisfying, I was given a few second hand nappies and was looking forward to seeing all the gunk come out but they were clean. I should be grateful for the way they were looked after. Do you know how the previous owner washed them? The amount of bleach it takes to santize is actually really low, something like 1 cup per bathtub of cold water.

I know this video is 3 years old now...but I know when I did cloth nappies there was this big push to not use regular detergent because it would break down the fibres of the nappies etc. These days I now know that you use detergent with enzymes to break down the uric acid etc. But honestly, we were told to use the most gentle solutions etc. now my youngest is 9 it is a fading memory. How am I even here lol

Also if you spray the stains with Tilex and let them sit a bit ,it will take the stains out much better than bleach. When my son was born my sister in law gave me some formula stained baby t shirts, she had used on her son. I couldn’t get the stains out no matter what I used. My Mother in law suggested I use Tilex. It was like a miracle! Stains gone. I still use it on whites with stains and some colorfast colored clothing with bad stains.

1/2 cup of borax 1/2 cup of washing soda (not baking soda) 1/2 cup of tide powder. I increased mine to 1 cup each the first time I did this. It was disgusting. I'm an older woman and I don't get my clothes particularly dirty nor wear them for a long period of time. I was stunned. I did see one youtube video the woman added 1/2 cup of Calgon laundry wash ... haven't tried that but I think I will. I noticed she only used 2 of the 3 ingredients. Might have made a difference.... don't know

Care of cloth diapers (circa 1974): Rinse used cloth diapers in toilet if child has had a bowel movement. Then place all used diapers in a cover diaper pail filled with cold water and a capful of bleach. Diapers should remain in the pail until wash day. On wash day drain pail and rinse diapers with cold water and squeeze out excess water. Wash on a heavily soiled machine cycle with detergent, borax, and bleach. Bleach is neutralized by heat. Dry in the dryer or on a clothes line in bright sun. Your diapers will remain clean and white. I used cloth diapers every day on my now 45 year old son. Also if you’re having problems with irritation on your baby’s bottom know that some child cannot tolerate the perfumes in disposable diapers, which is why I used cloth diapers every day. Also, HOT WATER WILL SET IN STAINS! The cold soak first prevents that from happening.

" Bleach is neutralized by heat": This is a myth and not true. According to Clorox: "Washing white and safely bleachable colorfast items with Clorox® Regular Bleach in the hottest water possible will give you the best cleaning and whitening performance because its effectiveness increases with temperature."

Hi first time cloth diapering my little one I was given free cloth diapers and I’ve washed them multiple times and they came out smelling clean but once dried they had a bon fire smell to them I’ve just made them finally soaked in hot water in my sink and the water is a light brown colour it’s pretty over whelming I’ve watched many videos on how to clean them there no stains on them the inserts in face isn’t as white as I would want them and I bleached them in the wash a few times should I read rinse them and soak them in a bleach water soloution and then throw in the washer to rinse them off some more ?

My goodness you're the trooper. I stripped all the nappies from my now 2yo and a friends baby girl for my newborn (due march) yesterday and I felt like I was washing for days. Can't imagine how laborious this felt. Or how you stayed on top of other washing in the middle of it all. Great score though. I've actually bought the same brand second hand in the past and I think 16 or so of them cost me $140. When I read the instructions of the strip wash and it told me to use 220ml of bleach for a large top loader and soak for only 30 minutes I felt like that wasn't enough bleach so now I'm wondering if I should sanitise them all again using more. Worried about how many washes I'll need after that though considering it wanted 4-6 washes after the bleach just at this concentration. I went by smell and just washed them until I couldn't smell bleach in the tub when I opened it anymore, is that what you've done? I know it's not an exact science but as you know there's a fine line between not wanting some other babies poo on your baby and not wanting bleach residue on them. 😂 thanks for the video. It was great after my very unsatisfying strip water which didn't look any different before and after the soak, just smelled a little "used" if that makes sense.

Thank you, sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner it didn’t send me a notification that you had commented. This brand is amazing I actually love their inserts and use them on the daily now. Honestly I would put the inserts in the bath tub with 1 cup of vanish and 1/2 cup laundry detergent. Soak them for 4-6 hours stirring occasionally, wring the inserts out and put them in the washing machine on a warm long wash with no detergent, if theirs any soap suds left do another wash to make sure all the soap is out. If the bath tub water is clean then you know they where clean to start with but no harm done :) I follow a amazing group on Facebook “clean cloth nappies down under”. They are the ones who have come up with such awesome techniques to get great clean nappies :)

Hanging out on a clothesline in the sunshine will also help with whitening them. I would do all the stripping in a washer doing in the bathtub is too much work. Or can u not shut off a machine these days? I only like top load machines that actually have an agitator in them which would actually strip laundry better and faster than just laying in a tub occasionally get poked at or not be moved around at all. So am I missing some reason why everybody is doing this in their bathtub instead of their washers? If u use products in your washer that soften hard water your clothes will get cleaner. Calgon makes a laundry water softener. Hard water contributes to the build up that gets on our clothes. I have never heard of stripping your laundry and I think the previous owner of the diaper/nappies may not have heard of it either. I'm 66 years old and have never seen or heard of anyone laundry stripping. All those products can be used in a washing machine. Washing soda will soften water and get stains out among other things. It can also be used to soak your laundry before washing to help with removing stains. Research it and you will see what soft water can do for your laundry and how it does it.

Generally no, when I do my normal washes I will put my machine on when I’m cooking dinner, it goes for a long hot wash and a 2 hour soak, then before bed I put it on a timer, and I do another long wash with a 2 hour soak. It finishes when I wake up, and I put the nappies in a basket then load the machine with normal clothing and take it out all at once when that loads finished x
