"Remember what you did when you were a kid when you were studying, how you retained information" I've never studied in my life for school, No one has taught me how.
@coloureleven
4 жыл бұрын
To retain information in school is three steps basically: Read/make notes : this is the first time you study a topic Recall: this is the most imp. You need to train your brain to remember the info you gathered. If you don't, when you read or write and understand everything, you think yk the subject but when you recall, you can see how much info you retained. Get a blank sheet of paper and write down everything you remembered in shorthand. Doesn't have to be neat, just that you should be able to tell whats going on. Revise: you need to keep revising the material from time to time. The more you revise, the more info you retain. Do the recalling first, then skim over the notes and see what points you missed. This is a good method to study (works for me pretty well) I learn better with writing but some maybe better with auditory learning n such You can include art tips in this -first encounter -recall -revise Method

I was a gifted kid, I feel this. I've never really learned how to study. I have some time management skills which got me through university but I learned through absorption and repetition. My best subject was Japanese and learning art has been very challenging because there isn't the same kind of just read-write-repeat flow to it that I get with languages.

Sycra and Blender Guru are two great examples of people who started at an older age. Their work in just 2-d painting is much to a professional level, basically there's no "key" age to start drawing. Unlike sports when starting young helps. c: Just enjoy what you're doing and always keep drawing.

Hi Anthony, not sure if you'll see this but here goes. Love the video and you make some very good points, but I'm having some trouble applying this. When I'm studying this way I feel I'm more highlighting things I already know then actually discovering new things. For example, when studying an Edgar Payne painting for composition i feel like all I'm doing is appplying the knowledge I have about composition to recognize what Payne did as opposed to learning about new ways to compose a painting. Am I doing something wrong, or is this what I should be doing and am I focusing too much on the learning "new" things aspect I hope this kind of made sense and once again, thank you so much.

I only study things to help me create the artwork I want to create. I don’t study other’s work and see how I can apply it to my work. This keeps it interesting to me and Practical to me. Later when you do enough work you might or might not see interesting things in other’s work. But there are so many things to learn. It’s good to limit yourself I think.

Really love your message on this, Anthony. It is true that so often the very first step of deciding upon your weakspots are left out. How can you go in a forward direction if you don't know which way is forward. I repeatedly find myself stepping further and further backward until i feel like i will never get out of doing the basics.. But i wonder if you ever really do. Even when i have already studied and learned something, i feel i have to go back to it in order to keep moving forward (too many side quests 😵)

I'm going to be that guy but exactly how to be the guy on the left in the picture you posted is to snatch a lot. The olympic lifts and their training regimes almost exclusively consist of the lift itself. That's how all eastern training is designed and they are all the best at it.

Awesome video, very helpful! My favorite advice for doing something that is both copying and studying is to try to replicate a masterwork painting, but from a different perspective. From above, from below, a bit off to the side, your choice, just as long as it is not exactly the same so that you can't just mindlessly trace over it, and this forces you to think about the same thing the master considered, like how light falls, what is around the focus, color choice, and so on. Top-down studies are my favorite since you can add in details that weren't there in the original painting 😁

This is an old video but I had to click immediately- THIS is the question I’ve had for a while. I’m trying to do what others to to get better and you see people post copies of life or other artists again and again, but how exactly am I learning from that? I needed this video to realise I’m not just ‘not getting it’. The most ‘study’ I likely get from copying is from me observing the reference.
