I’m in east AL so I’m glad I found you! hoping to start flower farming next year but gathering info because it is just a hobby now. Do you find the netting & the spacing helps with the leaf spot. I’ve read that over head watering can cause it so I won’t do that but man it can just dump buckets at my house when it storms. Also thrips, how do you keep from giving people a critter bouquet 🤦🏻♀️ 😅 my two main concerns, other than that I have zinnias out my ears. I’m glad i saw you cut that little side bloom off because i always felt guilty and left him on the plant. Do you teach classes because I’d be willing to drive to learn more in person.
@1818Farms
2 жыл бұрын
How exciting! Where in East ALABAMA? Spacing can help with the zinnias and leaf spot. A lot of that is hard to control due to our humidity. We try to have 2 succession plantings to help deal with that. The netting is to primarily keep things from falling over. I haven’t had a huge problem with thrips. We do spray neem oil when needed. I don’t offer any in person farming classes only a few hands on creative workshops.

That's the problem I've had this year as a third year zinnia hobbyist. My first year, I never pruned the first flower because it didn't look expired. As a direct result, that plant never produced another bloom. Subsequently, I gave up trying to grow zinnias for years after that disappointment. My second year, giving it another try after some basic research as the internet took off... I was thrilled with the results from simply cutting that first flower that never looked like it needed to be cut. And they claim that ignorance is bliss. This is my third year growing zinnias and I have been cutting to the next shoot with a bud. I was wrong once again. Thank you so very much for the gardening tips!!!

I sell to florists and one of my florists told me that they want some leaves left on the flower because they say it helps them absorb water. Also, they said that they pay more attention to the pollen in the center and only want a few of those "stars" present. They say that they are too old if more stars are present and don't want them. But in my experience, when only a few stars are present, the stem is usually floppy still. A strong, non flexible stem is always what I look for just like you said, regardless of how many stars there are. I have also always stripped all leaves off because I've heard it's better from other sources. Any idea why my florist would prefer their zinnias this way? I'm not saying they're wrong. They've been in business way longer than I've been growing flowers (only one year of official flower farming under my belt). I'm just confused because it seems to go against all that I've learned about zinnias. The way you described is exactly how I learned to pick them.
@1818Farms
2 жыл бұрын
I think they are wanting a specific aesthetic for their bouquets. What they are asking for, in my experience, will not provide them with long lasting zinnias. We strip all foliage on every flower we harvest.. This is so that we can focus on hydrating the flower itself and not foliage. The vase life is shortened with foliage remaining on the stem. Also, I never look at the pollen in the center. I wiggle and feel the flower stem to ensure it is mature enough to cut. Otherwise, you will have lots of broken heads and again short vase life. I cut thousands and thousands each season with this method. I think the florist is simply wanting a specific look and not realizing that what they are asking for is not best.
