Thanks this is perfect! I've been wanting to try to cultivate these guys for ages, finally there's some info out there about them 😊

Hey giftofthewild! I also struggled to find info on raising these worms! Hearing only rumors on old forums about people who cultured them. Glad I could help! May be a surprise but they seem to do best in clean tanks. With ample food and stable conditions.

When you raise Duckweed in a tank with moving water, it can be difficult to distinguish detritus worms from free-floating duckweed roots that broke off. It wasn't until i saw one do a quick random wiggle, that I confirmed at least some of them were worms.

My first experience with detritus worms was when the Malaysian trumpet snails I ordered brought them along lol. I panicked because I thought they were planaria, but nope, just friends. They're all named Gerald/Geraldine 😂 Great video as always!

Thank you so much! I've often seen these worms in my pond collection jars, but I was never sure if they were worms or insect larvae. (I'm still going to check with my microscope to be sure) It's become imperative for me now to culture very small live foods since I recently purchased some extremely small fish that absolutely won't eat non-live food. This will make a great addition for them!

Thank you! we are still learning about these nano worms. Out of a dozen collection trips we have never found them in the wild. The original culture came from an old abandoned aquarium

You are dead wrong, and did not even attempt to find information on detritus worms. We know so much about these worms we can use them to determine what kind of unseen issues a tank is having.

I'm still hit or miss with the DT worms! One day we might not see any... Then for no apparent reason the swarm appears. But I do have one tip: they seem to enjoy mold and/or fungal growths. I've used them a few times to remove such things from nano tanks.

Hi there. Great video. Im more interested in knowing if those bigger worms are harmful to fish and axolotls? Do you have a name for them?
@BucketPonds
Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching! The larger worms are completely harmless. I do not have a scientific name for them unfortunately. They behave a lot like tubiflex worms. Though we have others that are more akin to aquatic earthworms. Either way they are not a threat. Your axie or you fish will most likely treat them as a food item.

Some spawned in my jar full of biofilm and algae because of a wild plant I threw in there... How do I keep them from going extinct? Will they just eat decaying plant matter?

Hundreds of them crawling on my tank glass every time I feed my snails something with protein (shrimp food that smells fishy, so I think must have lots of protein). The worms don't come out when I feed the snails vegetables.

Hey Tim that's an interesting observation! I might have to try some protein and see how they react 🤔

I thought I have detritus worms that live only in or right on the substrate.
@BucketPonds

Yes the term applies to many different types of aquarium worms. Some will "dance" in the substrate. Others will stick to water surface area. And a rare few will swim freely like a swarm

so, i’ve been culturing mosquito larvae for my guppies, and noticed what i believe to be detritus worms when i let the culture buckets get too murky. would these be a different species, and have you had any success raising them? as the temperature cools down, i know i’m going to be lacking live food options for my tank, and i’m hoping maybe these guys will be a good alternative

Use any water from a pond ussually they will have them whether it be eggs or worms, you can let them grow and further isolate them.

That's a good question! Our starter culture came from an abandoned aquarium. It's a long story but yes it looks like they came in on some wild pond plants the person had collected.

This is the most troubling thing I’ve ever seen 😂😂have a lot of customer that don’t care if they’re there or not but I’m glad to be able to help anyone who like me is disgusted by these pests, I have over 40 tanks in my shop and have successfully kept them worm/pest free for the decades we’ve been open. Contrary to what everyone and their grandma will try to shove down your throat, you can successfully have beautiful worm free tanks! It’s funny tho, I’ve seen many unwilling folk “farm” maybe millions by accident and then there’s those that need tips lmao
