One of the scariest things for me when I entered nursing was the idea of staying up all night and work a 12 hour shift in the hospital. Not only did I need to stay up but I needed to be very alert and productive and at the top of my game - after all, lives depended on it. With time, I have figured out what works and what does not. I spoke to senior nurses who have been doing this for decades and their strategies made this a very easy transition. Now, working a 12 hour night shift is just as easy and enjoyable (or even more so) than a day shift. Here are my tips on how to make it better. Also, if you are considering a career in nursing, maybe take a look at this video and see if you would want this type of lifestyle and schedule. A majority of nursing roles in hospitals in Canada require these type of 12 hour shifts with both day and night shifts. Good luck!
