For those who don't know, "Le Monde" (the world) is a french newspaper. It's masculine, but they wrote "*LA* Monde"(which is feminine) at 2:27.

I lived in France for few years, close to Belgium. This is _exactly_ my experience in Paris and Bruxelles. I asked for "some chocolate" in a chocolate shop in Bruxelles. The lady kept pretending she could not understand what I was asking for. The shop only sold chocolate. The rest of the Francophone area is not so bad (still, even in border / multicultural cities like Strasbourg there is an unreasonable expectation that a tourist should be able to speak French).
@arminius2960
2 жыл бұрын
My experience in Straßburg is absolutely different. Trying to order in french and the waiter instantly changed to German..... So either my french was so bad or she just wanted to be polite xD. Same in other places near Rhine.
@bobon123
2 жыл бұрын
@@arminius2960 Oh yes, if you are German or if you speak German I have no doubt: in Strasbourg Alsatian (a German dialect, fully mutually intelligible) is as diffused - outside petite France I think that Alsatian is more diffused than French. But for me, that lived for 3 months in Strasbourg in 2012 without speaking French _or_ German, it was still a very peculiar experience. It happened to me a few times in restaurants in Strasbourg that there were _no_ waiter that _tried_ to speak with me in English. They simply gave up on the costumer. I mean, of course there are plenty of restaurants in Italy, Spain, or Greece without a waiter able to speak a decent English: I am completely aware that I am a guest and I should not expect others to speak my language. But it never happened to me that no waiter in the restaurant did _try_ to speak English or other languages I speak... and while Japanese is understandable not easy to find in Alsace, I speak a very decent Spanish and a fluent Italian and I am pretty sure that with a bit of an effort from both side communication would have been possible. Instead I clearly felt the staff was annoyed at me for not knowing any of the local languages.
@poja82
Жыл бұрын
Sorry for your bad experience, I'm Strasburgeois and used to be a waiter, there is a problem in your interpetation. French is a language with a lot of polite phrases as a formal requirement. Usually people from Strasbourg are very polite to strangers as long as you use polite expressions, always start with "excusez moi, s'il vous plait" and always finish with "merci beaucoup"; For example, to ask a coffee you should say "excusez moi, un café s'il vous plait, merci beaucoup". If you dont do that, in french culture you are insulting the other person. If you find that absurd, that is your problem, you cannot ask the whole nation to adapt to you cultural references. So, as long as you do that everything should be fine. Also, dont speak english, french find that rude.
@bobon123
Жыл бұрын
@@poja82 "Also, dont speak english, french find that rude." that is exactly what I am referring to. I speak three languages fluently, French is not one of those even if I have a working knowledge of it. I do not expect that the other person can speak English, but a waiter cannot expect that all the tourists learn French before visiting France. There will be cases where we have to deal with my bad French or their bad English and try to understand each others, and that is fine: I do the same in Indonesia, China or Japan. No one get upset other than the French. The fact that French people find it rude if I speak English is not fine, it is nonsense. How would I speak if I cannot speak French? I can speak Spanish if they prefer, but it would not make the situation any better.
