Probably the most underrated swimming stroke there is. Considering how a swimmer is able to move forward so fast, with minimal exhaustion PLUS with the head always above the water for uninterrupted breathing, this is what I would call a no-brainer.

I was taught this as a child when taking swimming lessons back in the day, and it has been my “go-to” default stroke when not doing the other more mainstream strokes. Considering how fast a swimmer is able to move forward in combination with low physical exhaustion I am shocked it’s not so well known, even among the pros.

Chris, I have been trying to convince my breast stroke friends that side stroke is faster, but not this version, or the combat swim. Old school record for 100 yard side stroke is 1:02.5, set in 1895. This old method is different in that the top side arm, on the recover comes out of the water, over the top, and back way in front, just like free style, bottom hand essentially does a breast stroke pull. If you co ordinate the recover with the pull, you can thrust into the next stroke like you do in free style when you are going for the wall and need that tiny bit of extra extend. Head goes under water with each stroke, you plane out in the water, and you can do flip turns. I can make the length of a 25 yard pool in 8 strokes if I am stretching, and 9 if I am sprinting. After knee replacement over a year ago, I was around 60 seconds for a 50. Now I am around 45, just pushing off the wall, no dive in. I am 65 years old. Some youngsters need to smash that record.... My way of telling if some one is some what competent in breast stroke is if they can get a full body length per full stroke, and I am getting around 2 body lengths per full stroke. Identical to my freestyle.
@ChrisBurtonSwims

Sounds like you're doing some form of the Trudgen stroke which used freestyle-like arms with a scissors kick (swimswam.com/the-origin-of-freestyle-the-australian-crawl/). If you enjoy it and it keeps you active, go for it!
@robohippy
8 жыл бұрын
Chris, one of the swim instructors at my pool commented that what I was doing was similar to the Trudgen. Looking it up, it is freestyle with a scissor kick. If you want to turn the side stroke into a power stroke and fine tune it for speed, think about how much extra parasitic drag there is by pulling the top hand through the water, instead of through the air, and consider that you get far more horizontal than conventional head high side stroke. It is interesting for me to note that with your version, you synchronize the pull and recover rather than the way so many others who pull first, then use the recover with the top hand. I have found it interesting that I can get the same pulse rates with freestyle and power side stroke that I get with my freestyle, but the freestyle wears me out faster... Oh, flip turns work well with this one too as the drive with the top hand pushes you into the turn. Took me a bit to figure out I was spinning sideways at first rather than straight over the top.
@robohippy
3 жыл бұрын
I will add to this that I dropped the scissor kick in favor of the flutter kick. Did it by accident during some 25 yard max sprints. After figuring out what I did, and repeating it, I took off 3 seconds from my PR 50 sprint time. The scissor kick is necessary for life guards where you don't have full use of both hands. It creates a lot of thrust, but also creates a lot of drag. The overarm side stroke becomes a constant motion stroke rather than a kick and glide stroke. Much more energy efficient, and much faster.

Hi, I don't know if you will still be responding to these comments as this video is out a couple of years. When I use the side stroke, I don't seem to be getting any propulsion from my kick. Someone said that I need to be more on my side as if on my bed, I tried this but got not much success. Would it be a simple case of kick technique? If so, as I can't be in the water as much as I would like would it be good to practice like how you did on the small-table?
@ChrisBurtonSwims
7 жыл бұрын
Practicing on land might help some with the scissors motion. However, it's really a kick that you need to get a feel of the water. If you are very stiff and mechanical with the kick, you won't get as much out of it. It's a tough kick because each leg is doing something a little different. With the top leg that you bring up towards your chest, you want to stomp the scissors closed using the bottom or sole of your foot. With the bottom leg, your foot stays in the more traditional pointed position. Try switching sides to see if you get more propulsion swimming on one side versus the other. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Don't inhale through your nose, and find a different coach. In order to inhale through your nose, you would have to first exhale above water to clear out the water. Doing so requires you to turn your head an extra long time, which doesn't work for competitive swimming. Also, be careful. If you're constantly sucking unpurified water through your nose, you're going to give yourself an infection.

+alexander goryunov - Try letting your shoulder roll out farther toward your back, and don't look forward the whole time. This may help keep the water away from your nose and mouth. However, if you are comfortable putting your head under water, that's fine. You'll just have to come up with a steady breathing pattern. Side-stroke is more of a survival stroke, so you primarily want to find a slow, steady, comfortable rhythm with this stroke.

It's meant to be a slow, fluid, survival stroke, so I don't feel like it is that tough on the shoulders. The bottom arm does significantly more work than the top arm. You can keep that in mind when trying to determine which side to roll to if one shoulder bothers you more than the other.

Maxwell Havins 1) Check your head position. If you have your head arched back too far or tucked in too much, this could lead you to drift in the direction that your head is pointing. 2) Check your rotation. If you over-roatate towards your back or under-rotate towards your stomach, this could affect your ability to swim straight as well.

When you are first learning side-stroke, make sure you roll your top shoulder out of the water and keep your ear down. If you are holding you head too high, your feet will sink, and you'll end up being more vertical than horizontal in the water. Experiment with how far you are rolling on your side. The farther you roll, the more your face will come out of the water. Hope these tips/ideas help. Keep working at it.
