17madman Every independent Mom ‘n Pop Shop is different. In fact, they are SO different that unless you are a regular customer with several stores in a locally owned chain, chances are that no two retro games stores are exactly alike, just like the composition of a snowflake. (Except a lot more extreme than that since small businesses are different in every town, state, province, country you visit!!) 😰 Bottom Line, Nintendo Life is a multinational team of online journalists- from both the USA and the UK, so it’s only fitting that they use a dedicated corporate chain with an international market presence for their video. Since GameStop is the last brick and mortar corporation to exclusively sell both used video games AND video gaming licensed merchandise, it only makes sense. 🤔

My gut reaction to this was “we seriously need a video to tell us to manage our hobbies?” But I genuinely like the frame of “we need to make time for ourselves.” All of these come back to being intentional. Intentional timing for play, socialization, spending, and perspective. If I get anxious from a backlog of entertainment, I legitimately think it’s time for me to take a break to regain perspective. Oh man, the bane of my life! Especially seeing as I mostly play games on PC where new games are flying at you continuously and sales are almost always too hard to resist. I would say making lists and making yourself accountable is the best advice. On Steam I sort my library of games into Current, Next, High, Medium, Low priority. It's really hard to make the call sometimes but keeping the Current and Next lists small is the crucial element. I also physically keep a diary of games I start and write down when I finish them and give a quick rating out of 10. This makes me feel more invested in the games I am playing rather than those I am not. But also, just as is said in the video, don't feel guilty for dropping something off your 'currently playing' list. You can always come back to it in a couple years time, just knock it down a rung of the priority ladder.

Great tips. I have started making a concerted effort on my backlog, and focusing on one game really helps, though I'm not totally strict on it and allow myself the odd binge with a few different games. I also allow myself one main home console title (ie something on the Wii or PS2, e.g. I just finished Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands and am now getting into No More Heroes) as well as one on a portable device (just finished Hotel Dusk: Room 215 on DS and am resuming FFVI on GBA). Buying games is an issue, but I am also trying to trade in games I am not massively into. I did that with about 5 or 6 games the other day and bought 3 as a replacement. Not as disciplined as I want to be, but it's still a reduction. I also think having a break with a short game after a super long one is wise, unless you have a tonne of time, which I don't.

What I’ve found hard is choosing which game to beat next, I often just don’t get to beating new games because I can’t choose which one to beat next. How I deal with this is using a randomizer to choose my games for me! I enter all of my unbeaten games in a randomizer, and whichever game pops up, that’s the one I’ll beat next. It adds a lot of variety to the order in which I beat my games. It keeps me from only beating a bunch of similar games back to back. It also keeps me from putting off all of the longer games in my backlog!

I like to use the snowball method which is useful to tackle debt but works for any multi-task check list. if you’re looking to knock out several games, look at the shortest games on your list and kill off a couple of the shortest ones first then start working up to bigger time investments. As the video suggests, it’s convenient to have “break” games to play when you’re putting a longer time investment on the back burner - something quick and easy to do before returning to your longer investment.

The part that helped me out the most was definitely cutting back on the games I've tried, but am not enjoying. For the past week I've been playing Persona 3 The Answer, I've gone through many dungeons already. The thing is, all the game is... is dungeons (and battles) with short moments of story sprinkled in. Persona 3 The Journey is perfectly fine as a standalone piece, and while it would be nice to find out what the characters are doing after the main events, going through a slog fest makes all unenjoyable. Glad that I decided to cut that from my life, not letting it tarnish my experiences with P3 which took place throughout the past year.

If you don’t mind losing out on some of the extra features and just want to manage your collection of finished-unfinished games, I highly recommend Backloggery.com. You do have to manually enter each game, but it is a great site, and even has a random game button if you just can’t decide which game to play.

What helped me go through my backlog back when the pandemic started was to compete against a friend about which of us could 100% most games. We went for a solid year, it was tough, but a lot of fun also. It even crossed the line that both of us called in sick from work every now and then just to get the upper hand! Yeah we realised it got way out of control. But my backlog was small as hell, compared to now. Right now it's larger than ever before.

A week ago, i started writing out what games i had in my backlog to determine which ones i should play. Then today this video comes up on my feed confirming i was doing the right thing & warnings to avoid such as buying games on sale. Haha. Thanks Nintendo Life!

I already figured all of this out myself before I watched this video, but it's good advice, and the website mentioned is a good recommendation, and I suppose stacking the games is a good physical representation of the backlog and shows my progression.

This lifted such a huge weight off my shoulders. Not because it helps w the backlog, but because I feel less alone in being too lazy and unfocused to play a damn video game sometimes.

5:28 I too bought Phoenix Wright during that sale while trying to manage my backlog. I find that my issue with my backlog is that I start my new games before I finish my old ones. By the time I get back to my old games it’s been too long for me to get back into it and I’m usually too far in to want to start over. This has happened with pretty much every JRPG I’ve ever played, so right now I’m working on finishing Octopath Traveler before I start another text-heavy game.

I love this, so I've had my Steam Account for 12 years, with 900+ games I just purchased on a whim because it was on sale or in a bundle! I just recently got really depressed and deleted my account, starting a new one and promising myself I'm only gonna buy games I REALLY want to play, and will play through them. Starting from scratch feels better because I know I only want the games I've loved and beat already or ones that I just really wanna play through! I'm also gonna focus more on indie titles since those I love so much more than AAA! Though there will still be a few (Elden Ring 😏).

I'm tackling my backlog in two ways, I have my collection tightly curated (except GameCube as I'm going for a complete collection) and it being kept in order is allowing me to play through each game in turn. The other way I'm getting through the backlog, a friend visits every Sunday night and we play games for about 5 hours straight so we can discuss them when we finish them

Just make a list, pick a game, play it, finish it, and repeat. But don’t just rush through it to get it crossed off your list. Take your time and enjoy the journey. There will always be more time for the games next on the list. Currently taking my time in Luigi’s Mansion 3 and having a great time.

One thing I would add to the list is...play games on easy mode. Getting stuck in some areas or bosses sometimes just isn't fun. I finally realized I didn't have to prove anything to myself. I still enjoy games in easy mode just as much as I did on hard.

I like playing a couple of non-completable games with my current backlog game I am trying to beat, just to change things up but not start up another backlog game. Lately I have been playing 51 clubhouse games, taiko no tatsujin (a rhythm game) and animal crossing. You can’t beat these games by nature, so they are nice “no pressure” games to play to take a break from a game you are trying to beat.

I've been going through my back log of switch games for the past several months and personally what I did was gather every single switch game and ranked them in order of time to beat, and categorized them as 6 hour and under game a 12 hour and under game, 25 hours and under and then the time sinks The times I was on break I'd just played what I want and beat those games. However once school started back up I played games that were all 12 hours or less because it takes less time to beat one game, that's another game off the backlog. It really felt like I made significant progress with my switch backlog and I have, I'm mostly left with lengthier titles that I was planning to save for summer break but could try to play them now due to current world situation. I'd really recommend just to play each chance you get with the switch even if you don't think you can play on the go or in public, just try it if you can every bit of progression counts.

1. Don't play a game on a higher difficulty than normal - at least not when you play it for the first time. 2. Use a guide when you're stuck. 3. Remember that you don't have to finish a game. If you don't have fun playing it anytime after the first 2 hours, drop it! 4. Don't buy a new game before you've beaten 2/3/4 games from your backlog. 5. Stop trophy hunting!

I unnecessarily buy games, but honestly I think it's a positive to have them ready whenever. I do check reviews, gameplay, and only buy if they're on sale... only if it's the games' lowest sale yet (not lowest = won't buy).

If you're a collector it's impossible to get on top of your backlog. The best thing we can do is try the best we can. My backlog has been about 100 games long for four or five years, as every time I finish a game another has been added to my collection. But playing one game at a time is definitely the best thing to do. Or, it was the best thing for me. When I used to play four or five games at a time I would hardly ever finish them, but after playing just one game at a time for the last seven or eight years I've ploughed through games. Seven or eight years ago my backlog was multiple hundreds.

My backlog consists of: Yakuza Kiwami- Yakuza 6, Gravity Rush 2, Fire Emblem Three houses, OG FFVII, Shadow of the Colossus, Luigi's Mansion 3, Yoshi's Crafted World, Pokemon Sheild. The biggest issue is I have is that I start it up. See what I have to play, get overwhelmed, and then loose the will to play. But this video helps me a lot with organizing

Try and vary the genres too. If my main game is an RPG and im taking a break from it for a few days, I like to mix things up with a platformer or shooter, so i dont burn out on that one genre.

It feels like adult life is anathema to video gaming. It's hard enough when you also feel like you have to be productive even in your off-time. I appreciate Final Fantasy XIV for this reason. I can take half a year off, come back and be caught up within a week or two. Then I can sign off and work on the rest of my backlog. I honestly couldn't imagine playing another live service game.

I also have a tip to add in. Keep the backlog separated. System by system. Focus on current gen and work your way down. And play the newest games first, like blacksmithing, strike while it's hot. And most importantly, do not ever turn upcoming releases into deadlines to meet. You kill 2 games that way.

After getting married and having kids one thing I do that I wasn't proud of initially was playing games on easy. I love RPGS so playing them on easy I was able to enjoy the story and side quests but not get stuck because of the difficulty. Also if I'm stumped by a puzzle I look up the answer immediately I don't have the luxury of wasting an hour or two on a tough puzzle.

I've been trying my best to have a rotation of three games: One long time sucking game like an open-world/RPG, a shorter/medium length game that I want to complete, and a "endless" game that usually involves online play such as Mario Kart or Splatoon

Here's another tip: if you want to finish a game asap and don't care too much about completion, you could look watch speedruns to determine the fastest route that you can take but at your own pace. That's what I did for Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion so I could beat it before the final Splatfest.
