Loved this, not a med student but a brittle asthmatic, I've had a few of these done and from a patient point of view I find it nice and calming/reassuring when doctors explain what they're doing beforehand like in the video (unless its an emergency of course)

Thanks to this video I was able to take 5 ABGS in a row in under 25 minutes. Which was amazing considering before I would waste 30 minutes on just 1 ABG.

Only thing to note, always safety net the patient after the procedure. If you notice any bruising, swelling or you continue bleeding for a prolonged period, get back into back with us or your GP etc.

I am going for a PFT study and don’t know if it will lead to an ABG test. I noticed in the video that there was an local anesthetic. I did not see that applied to his arm before they drew the blood from his artery. Was that just supposed?

1. You do not need, and will not be able to, in clinical practice, give local anaesthetic before doing ABG. they are done primarily in emergency situations and when venous sampling is unsuitable and 2. You should engage the needle safety device by pushing the cover against a surface; definitely not with your finger as theoretically this increases the risk of needle-stick injury.
@geekymedics

+Andythrax The British Thoracic Society recommends the use of local anaesthetic in all situations except in emergencies or when a patient is already anaesthetised. See guidelines here www.brit-thoracic.org.uk/document-library/clinical-information/oxygen/emergency-oxygen-use-in-adult-patients-guideline/emergency-oxygen-use-in-adult-patients-guideline/ In regards to the way in which the safety guard on the needle is engaged, see the device makers instructions here www.bd.com/hypodermic/products/safety_needles.asp

I’ve had this done to me a few times now in resus and never been Anaethetised, actually one of the students docs had a couple of goes - after having quite a few needles punched into me another one didn’t hurt too much! No anaesthetic needed I’d say!

It is UNETHICAL to perform a routine ABG without local anaesthesia as it falls WELL BELOW the accepted current best practice standards and guidelines.

Drawing blood from the underside wrist area (arterial and vein) tends to burn and pinch more for most people than a venipuncture elsewhere. It can lead to the patient reacting physically to the stress or just an uncomfortable stick.

Blood gasses tell how much oxygen your blood is carrying from the artery, which contains the most oxygen because it comes straight from the lungs. Next to the oxygen saturation of blood, a blood gas tells us something about the pH and acidity of blood, blood being naturally a little bit basic (pH 7.35 -7.45), and if this balance is disturbed looking at components which build this balance can point us in the direction of where the problem is

Just one thing: if you're "washing your hands" as shown in the video, by using hand sanitizer, that's fine, but you might want to do a more thorough job of "washing" by spreading your fingers APART. Moreover, cover your entire hands (front and back) with sanitizer, and SCRUB.
