Many thanks for that info. Timed just right. I have done Gooseberry cuttings and Blackcurrant cuttings similar but had not thought to do Blackberry.

Glad you found the video a useful prompt. The cuttings root easily so generally get close to full success. I’m taking cuttings to give me plants for my new allotment.

@@diyhomeandgardening You're welcome, there was one question I was wondering about, can I use Rooting compound on the bottom of the cuttings? Elderly neighbour died you see, and I used to do her gardening. Looking to take cuttings from her blackberry bushes as they are tasty. (am an amateur gardener)
@diyhomeandgardening

@@chunkymonkey55555. Hi and thanks for the message. You can use rooting compound on the cuttings, and it will aid root development if you are taking the cuttings in the spring. If you take the cuttings in the autumn then the compound won’t make much difference, although if you have some available then you may as well use it. Blackberry cuttings are easy to take and so you should be successful whenever you choose to take them. Enjoy your new plants and fruit for next year.

I'm assuming they don't freeze over winter in your area? Should I bring these in if my area freezes? I've discovered a wild thorny Blackberry bush on my land and I want to make cutting and sell them. Looking forward to October here as well I am pretty sure. I wait until they begin to die back?

Hi. Thanks for watching and the message. The Blackberries are perfectly hardy and quite tolerant of the cold so don’t need any winter protection. I just have the cuttings in the soil so they have to contend with whatever the weather does here. We had minus 12 this year and the cuttings survived. Hope that helps reassure you.

thanks so much! i am worried about a blackberry bush i just bought ( it only had 3 canes but one is yellowish and another seems fragile) and so want to propagate it as a backup plant.

Thank you for watching and your message. If you haven’t had the plant long then I would suggest you take the plant back to the garden centre you got it from, so long as they offer a plant guarantee. Otherwise, yes take some cuttings but you will need to take them from the healthy stems.

There are different varieties of blackberries, some produce on first year canes but most of the varieties I grow they produce on two year old canes. So in the spring I have one cane that grew as a new shoot last year and a new one that comes up this year. The new one doesn’t normally have berries but I let it grow alongside last year’s cane and top it in the mid summer so it will grow lateral shoots which will be next year’s harvest. After harvest each year I cut down the cane, leaving the newly trained cane to produce blackberries next year. Every spring the process repeats and I never have more than two canes per plant at any one time.

I have not had much luck propagating blackberries. They will look great for a while and then die. Can you tell me, do you use the flora cane or the prima cane to propagate.
@diyhomeandgardening

Hi. Generally I use the primocane cane but you can take cuttings from rather type of growth, with cuttings normally taking easily. You need to keep them on the moist side so Autumn ones work better.

so is this in the Northern Hemisphere? In other words, are you planting these in the Fall? I believe that's what you said, but I was suddenly concerned that you were in the Southern Hemisphere (thought you sound straight up British to me!) : )

Hi Mark. Thanks for watching and your message. Yes, I am straight up British, living near ish to London, and we are in the Northern hemisphere. The cuttings were taken in Autumn or what you guys like to call Fall. You can still take cuttings in the spring although the cuttings do come at the expense of some fruit production on the main plant, and you need to also ensure that the cuttings don’t dry out. Hope this helps you out. All the best 🪴🌼

Hi Andrew, Good to hear that you are starting to get into gardening. Many thanks for the message. Short answer is yes you can take cuttings from any stems of Blackberries that are accessible to yourselves, in a legal manner of course! Take the cuttings as shown in the video or as described and you will get some of your own plants to pick from next year. All the best 🫐🍓

@diyhomeandgardening

Hi Kenny. Yes you can propagate blackberries now, in spring, but just be mindful of the fact that taking cuttings now will be at the expense of some fruit production on your main plant. I actually took a few cuttings last week when I was re-tying in my main plant. The cuttings should root within about a month at this time of year.
