This video is so much more informative than others I’ve seen. Thank you for giving all the information like why succulents can go longer without water and the type of soil for putting the cuttings in. I find that I always have a lot of “why” questions and you answered them all.

one of my favorite plants. I always keep a pot on the patio in a spot that gets (only) morning sun and I'm never disappointed - blooms every year without fail and even if they die back to the roots in Winter they always return. Love the color on mine, but I'm going to have to look for one like yours with all the petals - looked like miniature roses! Beautiful!

I find that when I grow them outside in Scotland the cool temperatures causes them to flower right into summer time, although they grow very slowly. I usually grow them as houseplants as they dislike my climate, I also like this one the other varieties that I have don't have as many petals.

So informative-more so than other videos I’ve watched. I received a bouquet of flowers for Mother’s Day and to my surprise it has kalanchoe flowers on really long stems. There were some leaves but mostly just stem-would I be able to propagate one of the stems even though they have no leaves?

Yes that type is much more common, I was very happy to find this one for sale in my local garden centre, it looks really nice with the double petals.

Would it be okay to propagate them by planting the ones I pruned off into the same pot as the main plant? I would like to give it a fuller look around the base
@Gardeningat58N

Yes, but only if you have a big enough pot, otherwise they have to compete with each other for resources.

Thanks for the great. Idea! I brought a little cutting back from vacation. I put it in water to root. A few weeks later the top of the stem was covered in tiny black bugs. I don’t know where they came from. I rinsed the bugs off but in another week they were back. I rinsed them off and put some insect dust on them. I would like to have it as a house plant. Does this plant attract bugs? Thank you for any advice you can give me!

Thank you for sharing this 🙏 😊. Mine is yellow ( blooming now) I love this 🌱 cheerful flowers during winter months, but .... My 3 small cutting were planted too high ( I understand now after watching your video) becouse I have bare stem starting from the level of the pot ,than up, maybe a 5 cm. Leaves are small and sometimes turn yellow and drop off or get cut off. Don't really know what to do next to improve this plant better growth after flowers finish blooming. Should I just start from beginning? 🤔 Greetings from Nova Scotia ,🇨🇦

If planted too high the cuttings tend to become unstable and you will find that the plants lean over time or the new roots will struggle to grow as the surface of the compost dries out so quickly. If you have space in your pot top up the soil level to bury the stems. If successful they should start producing new leaves in spring.

@@Gardeningat58N Thank you very much for your reply ,appreciate your advice 🙏😊. Don't have room to add more soil,but will " soft" repot after flowering and will pot deeper = cover the bare stems. Hopefully I will be successful in growing this rewarding plant. Really like the shape of the rose like blooms. Take care and happy growing 🤗🌸🌷.

What's the best fertilizer for kalanchoe and how often? Cheers.

I would recommend a balanced feed other the summer, then switch to a tomato feed in late summer, autumn and winter. If you want very big leaves and faster growth you could use a feed that's high in nitrogen instead of a balanced feed. I would feed it every two weeks from March until October, then just a small feed once a month over winter.

What is the lowest outdoor temperature this plant can take?
@Gardeningat58N

It can handle close to freezing for short durations, but it is best to keep it above 10C (50F).

Thank you. I have propagated about 9 pots of the plant. It seems that there are small roots growing above the dirt high up on the stem. I can’t tell if they are rooted yet in the dirt but they all look healthy. About how long does it take to root in dirt. It was about two weeks ago when I planted them.
@Gardeningat58N
11 ай бұрын
@@gwe3599law it usually takes a few weeks for the roots to start forming, and then a month or two for the roots to start growing well into the soil. It will have a good root system in about 3 to 4 months.

Do you think I left too much leaf on the cuttings? Perhaps the large leaves will take longer to start growing again?
@Gardeningat58N
11 ай бұрын
@@gwe3599law it should be OK, they are succulents so leaving a lot of leaf is not usually an issue as drying out is not such a problem. It may take a little longer for the new root system to match the size of the leaves, but it will grow new roots just as quickly.

Yes that is also possible, although there is a much higher chance that they will rot when started in water.
@tymondabrowski12

They never rot if I put them in water, easily root and then live on the water as long as I need them to (they do become long and the leaves are small, so it's not ideal environment for them, but the plant itself is alive).

I know you're good with houseplants but do you know anything about umbrella plants I bought mine in Aldi's on it doesn't look too healthy looking
@Gardeningat58N

They are adaptable plants, although often when first purchased they will struggle a little for the first few weeks as they adapt to their new surroundings. Especially if they have been bought from a supermarket where they may have been left in cold dark conditions or not watered. Make sure its in a location with bright indirect light, although they can tolerate low light levels, and allow the compost to dry slightly on the surface in-between waterings. Over watering is usually the most common cause of plant death. How long ago did you buy the plant and is it going yellow or dropping leaves?
