As others have mentioned, the service manual warns that you must compress the tensioner vertically, not horizontally as in this video. In not sure why, exactly, so be careful. It would suck to have to repeat the job due to something like this.

Of course you can. When the crank mark is on- pistons are ALL center stroke. There's tons of room to move/work with the valves.

Hey - just did the heads on a 2.2 - your video was invaluable - great tips, like the tensioner. Here is something that you might use - took an old spark plug, cleaned out the electrode, etc, then silver-soldered a piece of copper tube into it (from the porcelain side). Stuck a rubber hose on that, then a compressor connector on that. Screwed it into a plug hole, put 50 lbs of air into it and it held the crank steady just fine so I could torque the crank bolt. Thanks Brian, great work.

Brian ...I was told when you compress a timing tentioner your suppose to do it so it's vertical so as not to introduce air in the hydro-logic piston. Have you ever herd this.

Hey Brian, you can leave the tensioner in place use a torque wrench on the bolt idler and slowly pull the tensioner up until the holes line up and fit the pin.

That tensioner looked decent, however, you need to make sure that its not leaking oil and the idler bearings are good. After 100,000 miles theses tensioners typically crap out...

Review the dewalt! I've been thinking of getting a 1/4, 3/8ths impact. One for small 10mm socket bolts and the 3/8 for bigger bolts. Sadly, the cheaper 3/8ths only do 130ftlbs and the $300 do 180ftlbs but only one battery. I don't want to be breaking bolts, but don't want to spend lots of time spinnings small bolts. And I picked the 3/8ths due to size, gotta fit in the engine bay, not like 1/2"ers. The 130ftlbs sears brand won't do it for my crank bolt.

Great vid ! Was wandering if it's possible to do a video from start to finish on a 2.5 SOHC EJ25 preferably in the car around a 2008 year. I have an Outback that I will need to be doing this to in the very near future and I would like to prepare myself for the task ahead. And by the way I subscribed to your channel, you've got a lot of useful info for the DIY'ers. It's appreciated that you put these vid's out there knowing that not everyone can afford the dealer prices on services.

I wanted to start doing more and more for myself and after watching more than half your videos, I feel much more confident in attempting the timing belt/water pump/etc swap myself. Please keep uploading videos, Thanks! Q: What do you think about the Company 23 cam locking tool for the DOHC?

Hi Brian, I have a very similar Subaru engine on my sandrail and I don't know much about it. I do know for sure that it is a 2.5 L and it has twin turbos and it's remarkably powerful. Where can I find out exactly which engine model it is? And you have produced yet another excellent video.

I would like to pose a question about flipping cars. Recently I set a goal that I was going to pay for my college with cash, NO loans. Over the past year I worked my tail off and saved $2,600, and I want to flip that to $14,136. I’m confident enough to say that I’ve got the work ethic to pull it through, but I’m also willing to admit that I may be a bit naive about HOW to pull it off. Does anyone have any tips on a good book to read or method for flipping cars?

Brian, I had my oil pump replaced by a mechanic with a new one and he used Honda bond silicone around the housing before he reinstalled it and torqued the 10mm bolts down loose. He said torqueing those 10mm bolts are not necessary but after he installed it, it still leaks! Did he not torque em down enough??? Can I take the timing cover off and tighten them to stop the leak? Thanks, Marc

Hey Subie guru, my 95 legacy 2.2 is playing up. When fully warm and when im giving it a hard time around suburbia ( stop\start built up traffic etc), the idle tends to increase to around 1600-2000. I fix it by bliping the throttle and then it idles normally. Any ideas ?

Hey Brian, love your videos! Very informative, you clearly know what you're talking about and have a knack for teaching and keeping things interesting. I've got an 02 outback with almost 160k miles and the timing belt has some cracks forming on it, so I'm planning to replace it (guessing it hadn't been done?). What other work would you suggest doing at that mileage while I have the front of the engine stripped down? Water pump as a preventative measure? Adjust the valves? Crank seal? Thanks!

As I have experience, it is always better if you replace everything that connect to timing belt. That would be water pump, etc. My friend had car like this engine and when water pump broken, it damage engine badly.

I am going to replace spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, pcv valve, and timing belt. Anything i am missing that u suggest? Don't do it. Too many things go bad in cars before people decide to sell them. With the internet, eBay, Craigslist, gives the buyers a better selection of more quality. Parts cost too much to recoupe a vehicle with a problem that shows up after having the car for a week.

But was the tensioner KNOCK.!!!

You can avoid all of this by prying the tensioner up putting a prybar between the water pump and tensioner(then insert the pin). I would not re-use a tensioner that has been in the same situation as the video.
