Here is an OK way to remove the lid of an oil drum (don't do this on fuel drums, precautions must be taken with those guys) which I thought I needed to record for some reason.
I used a cold chisel and hammer, if you were keen you could probably make a big can opener to do this.
It puts the fire out but too quickly, supplying air with a fan didn't seem to make it work any better, just letting the fire burn longer before covering would probably be the way to go. Might make a retort and turn the drum into a burn barrel.
