I love buying art. I prefer to be greeted, then left alone until I have questions. I’m mostly interested in how the artwork is made. I hate conversations about where I come from, etc. I can’t properly look at artwork while someone is chitchatting with me.

As a long-time craft fair shopper (and a beginning craft seller), I kind of like it when the artist is just looking at their phone. I’m an introvert, and when I walk into a booth, I would rather be left alone to browse. If the artist starts talking to me it feels like they are trying to get me to stay longer and it makes me uncomfortable. I’d rather browse in silence until I have a question for the artist or I am ready to buy something. Maybe a nice middle ground is when the artist says, “Let me know if you have any questions,” and then leaves me to browse in peace. That way, the customers who like to be greeted will get that acknowledgment and the introverts are not made uncomfortable.

That is a big problem especialy in germany 😂 you just have to say Hi! All customers are gone like some very shy deer. The „ Hello! If you have some questions, just ask me.“ is a good compromise in my experience. And no staring, german customers hate that 😂

When i worked in retail, i found this to be the best middle ground.

I must say, I'm quiet anxious at fairs and always hope I wont be noticed checking out art before I'm ready to actually buy or talk. But I get why artists should meet and greet, it does form connection and makes people more likely to buy.

I agree with everything especially the display of price.

I love greeting customers and engaging in small talk chit-chat. Then explaining whatever sales I have, emphasize I sell original one of a kind unique pieces, at affordable prices. And ask if they are looking for anything specific.

Hey Krystle! I've been a fan since the Neurosoup days and it's incredible to see how you've developed as an artist. All the best to you and yours!

Man, I need to go to more art fairs. The only ones I go to are the First Fridays in KCMO. I was introduced to you and your work via the Vice documentary with Hamilton Morris. Now I love seeing your art coming out of this "spiritual black hole" we call the midwest 😂

There are so many good art fairs in Kansas City! If you're trying to sell your work at them, I'd check out Santacaligon or Westport Art fair. There's also the Plaza art fair and Brookside art annual, but they're hard to get into.

@@KrystleColeArt I don't actually sell art, but the broader strokes of your advice are insightful for anyone trying to sell anything they've made or collected as well, which I do from time to time. Hell, you could use this as a training video for a yard sale on yard sale day. I will definitely look into those events though, I think they'd be great date ideas, so thank you 💚 hopefully I'll see you some day. ✌️

I have a video coming out soon about exactly what I say to make art sales. I think it will help. Look out for it, I think in the next week or so it'll come out :)

How awful! When I have family with me in my booth, I make them sit behind my booth and tell them I can’t talk to them when customers are there. I know that’s not always possible though ❤️

Don’t let her come to your booth at all if she’s that annoying.
