I found this video very helpful. My mare is the worst about standing still at the mounting block. I'll be practicing this and also the one rein stop. She's a great little mare except for this and trailer loading, which we are also working on.

I like to introduce different ‘scary’ things to my horses. They have become desensitized to the point that when I danced around them with a large tyrannosaurus head, they just stood there and looked at me like, ‘you are such an idiot’.

My horse seemed to not spook at anything at all, have had him for 4 months, BUT THEN!!!! While on the trail, there was someone up on a the rocky hill about 100 yards away and he spun and bolted, and I fell off. I DO not know how to help him with that, since it's such an isolated incident. But his head did suddenly go up high and he breathed heavy, I should have recognized the sign, but it was totally unexpected!! and of course I flew off and he ran down the road.

I just got a 10 year old OTTB mare around 10 months ago that I absolutely love she stands and waits for me when I walk out into her pasture to get her and she is fun to ride but it's when I'm on the ground that we start having difficulties. She has no ground manners what so ever when I walk beside her she will whip her head up and sometimes hit me in the face she side steps right into me and when I try to get on she starts to get distracted by everything in the arena. But when I do eventually get on shes so easy going and calm that I could put a 4 year old on her and wouldnt worry about it (i haven't put a kid on her) i have no idea how to fix this behavior any suggestions?

Thank you so much! I am currently in lessons and I basically take part in caring for the horse I ride, Pearl. She'll whiney, move around, etc when I'm brushing or tacking her up. Although, nothing spooks her. A dog lunged at her once and Pearl just looked at the dog as of she was saying, "You're stupid."

Hey i have the problem with my mare of walking right away when mounting. I do the one rein stop and she doesn't just stop like you're horse instead she keeps moving in the circle or if I leave after doing he one rein she will again start moving forwards. Another problem that I face is that she never wants to be in the riding school as we don't have a proper closed area like we don't have the gate so she every time wants to walk back to the stables. And this problem is I guess related to the other that I discussed above about moving when I mount as she just move towards the gate and wants to go back. Every time I stop her and she just wants to go back to the stables and start moving. Can you help me?

Hey Carmella! I love your videos, they have helped me and my horse learn and grow so much! I don't know if you do video requests but I would really love a video on helping your horse have a more responsive stop. Sometimes, my horse gets carried away (usually at the canter) and doesn't want to stop. It's really scary because I only get to stop when he wants to. Thanks and keep up the great work!
