Love that this is unscripted! He’s so well aligned-at 2:38, that rear side-step into position really caught my eye. I’m wondering if it came just from your feeding position which you cover next with Jake, or if pivot and/or other heeling position pedestal work has contributed? Thanks for sharing this “candid camera” novice work session!
@DoggyU

Great question! Eve has worked hard on hind end awareness using a pivot bowl. We had actually worked in streamlining that training earlier that day. That being said, how you feed has a huge effect on lateral movement. I don’t think pivot work is required work for this figure 8 exercise, but it will definitely look fancier! Lol

@DoggyU

I'm so glad you have such a smart dog! I would just be really careful about having your dog respond to panic attacks at this young and impressionable age. General rules is you want them to be socially and emotionally mature (around 2 years old) before they are responsible for tasking during major medical events.

@@DoggyU would it affect her later in life? Should I wait, I thought service dogs were always trained at a young age to make sure they can do stuff later as they get older
@DoggyU
Ай бұрын
@@Rottweiler0311 Having a dog respond to high-pressure/stressful events as a puppy/adolescent can potentially cause them to become fearful of your panic attacks, or burn them out for service work. In general, we train the skills from a young age, but don't deploy them in real-life scenarios until they are older, if those scenarios can involve fear/emotions that can effect the dog. It's not as much of a concern for non-stressful tasks like shutting a door or retrieving an item, but is a concern for panic attacks, anxiety etc. where you're putting a lot of pressure on the dog while they're still developing.

@@Rottweiler0311 Don't hold off on training everything. Just hold off on using the trained response in real-life scenarios. Hey Tazy! Same principles apply, but the food delivery may need to change if you aren't able to bend over (though I do this exact same exercise with small dogs frequently by just bending over to reinforce) but alternatively, you can use a wooden spoon with peanut butter or cream cheese on it and then just move the spoon back up to your belly button, mark and then put it back down to your dog's face for a lick or two, and then back up and away. I show it in a few of the videos on the list at the end of this video. Hope that helps!

I got it with KZitem and 'more' under the description. my question was when in patron you would make a comment about KZitem and I have to wait till the KZitem comes out to get it, or comment and like and thumbs up and stuff to help your rhythms. I have decided I would be best getting a show bred golden retriever because they are the most docile for my 72 yrs and balance issues and stamina for training. But as of last night I have now had 3 dreams of walking with a German shepherd as a Service dog. So maybe there is something other than my own calculations at work here. A year ago when I started this path I wanted a shepherd because they seemed to be sturdier and stronger than a golden. I learned "Siever's Retrievers" is about 50 miles away but they want $3000 each. they also hve doodles.
@sweetbarksandberries4556
8 ай бұрын
oops. hit sent or something while trying to go back and put in an 'a' in the hve. I have no particular breed choice (love the looks of aussies but I know they have to much energy). And I don't want a dog that will me crazy and vice versa because I can't get it's energy out. And at 72 I am not so fond of the Midwest winters now. It was more tolerable for me in Woodland Park Colorado where I spent 3 years because it was DRY. Here at 60 F I feel chilled to the bone and summer is hard to breathe. I think I just do the humidity well. Anyway, a shepherd was my first thought for a mobility dog, able to offer a slight pull if needed and a brace to get up occasionally. I will have my cane so I can hopefully prevent going down without getting the dog in an unsafe situation. Dec 26 I go back to my local dr to get them to pick the process back up, after it fell through the cracks and came to a halt. It is one small office for half a county. Of course one high-rise in a city has more population than half a farm county. I need to shut up. Hey maybe you need to check out Sievers Retrievers for a possibility. I may get a fully trained dog through the VA process, but I did say I am willing to train from a pup myself. And that would require a much calmer dog than I imagine a shepherd adolescent would be. And all the brushing of either is therapeutic for me. OK I AM NOW DONE!!! Sorry for all the time.

Great video! May I ask...if training has been done where the right side was used, can / should I retrain to use left side. After watching a few of your other videos I now understand why the left side makes more sense for a right handed handler. Sorry for all the questions.
@DoggyU
Ай бұрын
You can absolutely retrain to the opposite side (and I do recommend training for both sides so you can switch as needed), but if you prefer your dog on the right, there's no issue with that at all. I just happen to generally walk them on the left predominantly, but I also train on the right to keep the dog balanced.

Reinforce them consistently and generously for having four feet on the ground. This pup was actually quite jumpy when I first started working him. By focusing on rewarding the moments when I was getting the behavior I wanted, he quickly realized that it was better for him to walk than jump at me or the leash :)

@DoggyU
20 күн бұрын
First, loose leash walking is really hard, so don’t feel discouraged that it’s not coming together right away. All training requires the systematic introduction of distractions, and it sounds like that’s what your walking needs as well. I would start in a wide open empty parking lot, train for a few minutes, go home. Then find a not busy parking lot near a store and practice there, with the goal of getting closer and closer to distractions. Keep sessions short with high rates of reinforcement.
