Thanks for sharing. You bring up a really important point regarding self-practice. As a kid growing up, I learned how to catch pop ups by simply throwing a ball in the air and catching it myself. I would make a game out of it too. Sadly, many kids today don't find the simple action of throwing a ball up in the air or throwing a ball against a wall entertaining enough to keep them engaged.

Being afraid of the baseball is perhaps the #1 issue young coaches face. Some kids never get over that fear and end up quitting the game. It's just an unfortunate reality. Try having your 5 year old catch a rolled up sock first, and then progress from there - perhaps to a whiffle ball, then a tennis ball, then a incrediball, and finally a baseball. Using a progressive type approach is what we would recommend. Please keep me posted.

Thanks for your comments and insights. You hit the nail on the head regarding practice at home. Many parents expect their child to get better simply by taking them to practice one or two times per week. Baseball is a very hard game - it takes more than a few hours of team practice to get better. Parents need to do their part and practice with their sons and daughters at home.

Great drill for the youngsters. Love that you praise him for using correct technique even if the result is a dropped ball, kids have a huge capacity for learning stuff and adapting to the right way of doing things. I did this with my 7 year old grandson and he was catching 20 yd + throws with ease after just an hour of training.

With T-Ball hitting, keep it as simple as possible. I would focus on the following: 1) Balanced Stance - feet shoulder width apart, both elbows in a relaxed position, bat 45 degrees from the ground (you can sit the bat on the shoulder too) 2) Short to the ball, Long through the ball - get the hitter to swing through, full extension 3) Head on the ball - no flying of the head. Head flies, so does the body.

Thanks for the comment and feedback. You certainly bring up a great point regarding the importance of repetition. In fact, we just did a coaching clinic last week where one of our highighted points was exaclty as you have explained - young athletes can't go through a drill once or twice and then simply apply it in real time. It takes several weeks of repetition, maybe even years, especially when it comes to a skill such as throwing.

Baseball sign ups just started here, so I'm signing up my 4 year old & 6 year olds! I'm so so excited! I grew up with cousins that played baseball and even though I'm a girl, baseball was the only sport I'd play at home. Here it starts from 4 year+. Thanks for this vid cause I'm going to get my kids to practice easier now that I know how to teach them properly.

Great video. I tried this out with my 5-year-old last night and saw instant results. After attempting to catch a small foam ball with his left hand a dozen times, we switched to a heavier ball and his mitt and he was able to catch a ball from over 10-feet away. Considering he's only ever been able to catch using the basket method, and using both hands, I'd say this drill is a winner.

Keep throwing as simple as possible for 4-6 year olds. Use this verbiage over and over again - "turn, step, T, throw." Turn gets them to get their shoulders pointed towards the target, step with the opposite foot (put a piece of blue painters tape on their opposite foot so they know which foot to step with), T to reach back with the throwing arm and point the glove at the target. Don't worry about throwing motion yet at this age, just Turn, Step, T, Throw. Keep me posted.

Great learning tip (soft toss without a glove) ...but let's be honest... this kid already knew how to catch properly before this video was ever made. The fact that he knew to repeatedly push in on the webbing of the glove (2:55, 3:01, 3:07, 3:29, 3:37, etc) demonstrates that he's already been taught how to open his glove wider for a proper "upright" catch (which he wouldn't do if he only knew to hold his glove downward like a true beginner). Any baseball player knows exactly what I am saying.

With that said, I can tell you that this particular youth athlete struggled with glove positioning, and this film was shot in real time - nothing staged. We have found that this drill will give almost immediate results, as authentically demonstrated in this video. The challenge however is the young athlete returning to his/her bad habits the following day. That is where repetition, as you correctly indicate, is essential.

Great drill, but here is the constructive criticism; The first series you threw the ball, it was low. Waist high. The second time it was chin high. I'm pretty flexible, but keeping fingers up at my waist is difficult without squatting down to ball level. It is a natural position waist down to turn the glove like your young player did. Waist up, fingers up. Again, great drill, just a small observation.

I don't know if you are still checking comments, but how do you teach your 5-7 year old fielders to catch a pop fly (infield or outfield)? The proper way with glove up? Many will hold the glove out like a basket basically.
@andrewpohl3324
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reaching out, Carl. Really challenging to teach this. Try throwing soft balls directly over their head. They will have to run backwards (Not fundamentally correct), but who cares at this point. When the ball is slightly behind them (or over their head), hard to catch basket style. Just trying to get them the feel for glove up. See if that promotes proper positioning.

Coach, great job on teaching this 5 year the proper way to catch a ball while keeping it simple and easy for him to understand. I have gone back to the youth field where I used to coach and I see too many wanna be coaches, coaching with their ego to 7 year olds. I saw a Daddy coach with a shirt and tie yelling at a kid to turn 2, and parents yelling in the stands as well. The kid looked so confused! You can tell by the look on the 7 year old players face that the Daddy Coach never taught little Johnny to get one out, let alone try and turn 2. I talked to the President of the league, and he is appalled that today they keep getting coaches that coach with their ego & not for the kids.

"Please stop throwing to me from a standing position immediately. Your throwing at my face from the point of release." Why do you think I'm back peddling away from your throw that begins 4 feet over my head? - Said the 5 year old:) Maybe we should have all the coaches line up and try and catch 50mph from someone throwing to them from the top of the dugout. Then maybe then they would figure it out.

Let me clarify that I am not saying there was any intent to mislead here. I know the guys in the video are just providing a demo video for learning. It's just that some commenters seem to think this will immediately work for their kids, in one day... and might get discouraged if it doesn't work the first time they try with their own kids (like this kid seemed to). This is a great tip... but stay at it. Practice practice practice. That's how kids learn. Repetition.
