The-You just need to be sync with both hands and know your way around plus having the beat within. You teach tabs,I teach songs off tabs plus infos here and there. Parents see teens positive and happy thats all they want! The theory I don't know much and don't need,I know all my chords and where are all the sounds I need on the neck. Theory they can learn online for free,they mostly need a kick in the butt to learn to play and having a great entity in front of them teaching them. You will learn more than them by teaching them songs that you never had interested in playing.

I’m about to start giving lessons to some kids in my neighborhood and their parents want to do 1 hour lessons. Do you have any advice to keep the kids from getting bored or keep the lesson exciting? 1 hour just seems kinda long for a lesson when a big part of learning is taking time to practice on your own. Keep up the good content!

Hi Julian, thanks for reaching out and good luck with your teaching venture! I’d advise splitting the lessons into two sections. One half could be chords, the other half scales. Or one half could be from a book and the other half could be more open and dictated by the students personal taste. However you do it, one half super beneficial and the other half fun seems like a good way to do it. I hope that helps. All the best!

I have wanted to teach guitar, and I have started with some of my younger siblings, but I didn't dare teach anyone else because I wasn't sure if I could justify charging because of my lack of experience in teaching. Hiya mate, that's great! I'm glad I can help. I do recommend encouraging them to perform, because it will give you/them something to work towards and also their parents a sort of proof of their improvement. And yes, generally if you can get them to perform, you'll have a student for life! :)

"but I didn't dare teach anyone else because I wasn't sure if I could justify charging because of my lack of experience in teaching" . Offer a free trial. If they are happy, then they will go for the second one, and that means that you are good enough. If they don't go for the second one, you'll have to improve AND keep on looking for other students: after all, the first student may have no time to learn further guitar in the end, or he may have other reasons to stop lessons unrelated to you. Tuning, basic open chords, strumming? What else? Any extra info would help me. Thanks a lot!

Thanks and cool. I think the best thing to do is to just start. I'd recommend teaching some basics riffs and chords but keeping it very simple. The target should be progress every week, no matter how small. So take it at the pace of the individual student. If you give them too much, they'll be disappointed when they don't master it. Keep them happy, keep them excited and keep them improving and you'll all be happy. :) I'm thinking of writing an online course on how to be a successful music teacher, do you think this is something that might help you and others alike? Thanks and all the best, JT. :)

@jtguitartv
3 ай бұрын
I’m sorry to hear that. I do think you can be an effective teacher without playing as much if at all. As long as you can clearly explain and guide people on what you’re doing wrong Abs how they can improve, that should be all you need. I often have days where I perhaps taught for 7 hours turn paired a two hour gig in the evening. So the next day I do less playing to help my arms/hands recover. Also, drum and piano teachers often have to teach without playing because they usually only have one instrument between the student and teacher. :)

@@jtguitartv yes, I mean the only thing I left wanting a bit more clarity on is how you should structure the lesson. Especially with begginers. That’s a good shout. I was focused more on how to make it work as a business as opposed to how to teach but that isn’t clear from the title. I should have done a category on what to teach. I think I avoided it because I teach everyone differently depending on their experiences interests and goals. I do have a pattern of trying to tap into whatever gets them excited and I try to harness that to keep them interested and enjoying learning. I’ll take on your suggestions for if/when I do a follow up video. I’ve been a bit too busy for videos lately. Need to get back into it though.

I’d advise finding out what kind of music they like and finding an entry level way to teach them that. They best way to help someone to improve is to teach things that they enjoy so that it doesn’t feel like hard work when they practice. The hard work can come later, once they’re hooked. If they don’t know what they like then maybe take them through a beginner book. I hope that helps. I think I’ll do a follow up video advising what to teach.

+Heisenberg hiya mate, I first give everyone a free trial lesson to find out; what their goals are, what sort of music they like, what (If any) previous musical experience they have and what it is they'd like me to help them with. And then depending on their age, ability and taste, I give them the easiest thing I can think of that they'll find achievable and rewarding enough to get them started. It could be some very basic chords, or a riff or melody. As long as it's achievable for that person. I also explain to them that it's not a race and it's important to go at your own pace. If you go in too hard and fast, it can become frustrating or unrewarding and that leads to people giving up. I hope that's helpful. Thanks for watching! Maybe I should do a video on what to do in a first lesson. :)

Here in the UK we have The Musicians Union and each year they update their recommended lesson prices. It might be worth seeing if you have an equivalent in your area. Another thing you can do is look up what other teachers are charging in your area and then adjust your own pricing accordingly. I hope that helps and I'm really excited for you! :D

Hiya mate, that's a bit too much for me to go through in a comment. But, of you're not sure where to start, I'd recommend teaching the Rockschool Grade books. :)

Hahaha! If I could, I'd love to give you a free guitar but I'm afraid all the ones I have are too sentimental to give away. Thank you for your support though. I've had a bit of a gap from filming but I'll be making some videos again soon! :D

Can I teach my friend to play for free?
@jtguitartv
4 жыл бұрын
Sure, I can't see why not. My friends and I used to reach eachother stuff all the time growing up. If it wasn't for my friends, I wouldn't have got anywhere with my playing.

im thinking of teaching little kids to play the guitar. I have been taking guitar lessons myself for 7 years now and my techer says i could try to teach beginner kids the guitar to make money. (of course less than normal guitar lessons) The problem is nobody wants guitar lessons of a 15 year old... my teacher says out of 200 of all ages im in the top five and i think im pretty good but im scared that i cant teach. Has anybody tips?
@jtguitartv

I think you should just go for it. I started when I was 14 and I hadn't been playing as long as you! What's the worst that could happen. :) You'll learn how to teach as you go too.

1:50 I don't mean to be rude, but what did you say? a "HND" course? One more thing... What is "Google places" (11:29)? I looked it up and couldn't find anything. Thanks for making this video. It really helped a lot. Jam on, man!

No problem, yes, that sounds like I said HND (Higher National Diploma). Google places is basically Google maps but the portal where you add your business to the map. It may have changed its name since making this video. Thanks so much for watching. :)

Respectfully, it would be nice if there were actual teaching tips by the halfway point. By teaching tips, I mean what to teach.

@@jtguitartv well thank you for not taking exception to my remarks. Is there any place where you guide viewers as to what to teach?
@jtguitartv

No worries, thanks for letting me know what kind of thing you’re looking for. A good guide as to what to teach people is the Rockschool Grades. At each level they provide songs, theory, sight reading and technical exercises. About half of my students are working from those books. The other half I teach whatever gets them going and they enjoy playing. Some I teach finger styles, others 8 string metal. To each their own. I don’t have a video advising what to teach as of yet. But I need to do a more updated version of this video soon anyway and we’ll include what to teach. :) I hope that helps. Ah the best, John.

@jtguitartv

Hence successful teacher, not successful you tuber. In the REAL world. I own a music school with over 100 students a week and earn £80k+ a year (over $100k). As far as local music teachers go, I’m one of the more successful ones. :P If you would like the same for yourself, feel free to pay attention to the video and not the sub count. ;)

Excellent video content! Sorry for butting in, I would love your thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (probably on Google)? It is a great one off guide for mastering guitar scales without the headache. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my cousin at last got great success with it.
