We're very fortunate as English teachers to be able to integrate other other subjects into our lessons. Doing it the right way is critical for success though, so I'm happy that you're on hand to teach these strategies. I especially like the CUBES strategy. Just watch out for shaking hands, we have to rethink our teaching strategies when it comes to touch and hygiene. Even though I clean my cards often, I don't feel comfortable sharing obects or letting students shake hands as part of the lesson for the immediate future. Unfortunately as teachers we are held accountable for our students' health.

What happens when they can't even read the word problem and when you read it can't really understand what you say? Should you just put pictures of the main items in question on the board and vocalize the vocabulary? I've been in classes with kids whose English was so poor, they could not read any of the word problems.
@TheLanguageLady

Hello! Thanks for watching the video. What I usually do is model several problems that are similar and explain what the words mean. For example, a word like "of" in a math problem can mean multiply, etc. We underlined several words and use symbols. Also, having then use those models and save them in interactive notebooks to refer to. I hope this helps.

@@NonyeBalogun You are right. Math is a collaborative thing but it is also very individual since each student works at his/her own pace. I think guided math groups are great for this. That way you provide each student with what s/he needs.

Awww, thank so much! Math is its own language, isn't it? There are so many different meanings for certain words and as a teachers we have to explicityly teach how certain transition words and phrases add meaning to the word problem. Its almost like there's a hidden language.
