I've learnt that questions such as these are quite useful: "I see a problem in this sentence. Do you see it?" "Why can't we use this verb?" "Would you like a link to practise [topic]?" I've found that this places the ball in the student's court. It also gets them thinking and analysing their work. STT can also be maximised in this way.

I've dealt with both European and Chinese students for about five years in the past and have handled Chinese students who also cut me off with endless "I knows" during sessions. One of my students explained to me that when they repeatedly say "I know", he means to say that he "understands". Oftentimes, it's the language barrier and misunderstandings that get in the way and as teachers, it's our job to understand them and show empathy regardless of how rude, bored, or aggressive they are in class. I have to admit though, I have confronted some students (lovingly) on their bad behavior in the past.

Hello, Teacher Karen! I have a regular student and we have more than 200 classes together and I can see that He's so familiar with me and my actions. I always try to ask him relevant questions but sometimes I feel like he looks down on me and he tells me what to do and shows disinterest in the class. It hurts me because I think of him as a good boy and we also shared great moments together. I feel gloomy because of this. π^π I always try to brush it off. But I really can't hide the fact that I'm hurt. I always try to give him my support despite of all of this.

We are just humans teacha, it really is upsetting when our "babies" turn into bad babies. But it happens, that's why it's important that from the beginning, you have already shown a little parent-like authority. For example "Uh uh, when you need something from teacher, you say it nicely and you say please" .... things like those, so they know that even though you are not an authoritarian figure, you are to be respected.

I always empathize with the student. This is what I mean: Try to imagine the class from their point of view, and think - did the teacher (you) do something wrong? Was he/she impatient, rude, inconsiderate to you in any way? If the answer is no, then it's obvious this child has inner frustration and it has nothing to do with you!

I agree. I wondered if the student may have been beating HERSELF up about it. Like “duh! I know, I know, I know. I’ve learnt this but here I am, still getting it wrong …” That said, I can see the teachers frustration about being spoken over. Especially if this student’s constantly cutting her off.

That's also true, beginners and intermediate learners aren't that familiar with sarcasm and politeness in the English language. However, it's the overall register that I based my perception of rudeness e.g. facial expression and body language (which were censored)

Teach sa feedback part na dapat I-correct si student. Allow them to talk muna wag muna ibombard ng info. It's really important to take note of the ungrammatical sentence/s para pagkatapos ng session that's the time we can give them our feedback and corrections.

Kaya lang we must give feedback right away so the understand where and how they committed the error, what's important is that you do not cut them off, let them finish then give feedback. QAs give a mark down for feedback not given right away. :(

I have this kind of student when we have a class together. It's a kind of iritating to me since from the beginning up until 25th minute when I ask him a question he only says "OKAY."

Think about it this way, it's not YOU. Many Chinese students are so exhausted from school work and extracurriculars because of tight competition among kids (only those who are smart get to be accepted in good schools as early as primary school) So pretty much, this is a part of our.job, as long as you do your part, you should be ok :)

We also have to consider that since they are still in the process of learning the English language. They probably have less understanding that the way they talk and express their opinions and ideas is quite rude and disrespectful.

Exactly... Which is why we must not only base our assessment on their word choice, but also their tone, register and body language :)

That's when you must come up with ways to communicate the situation with the parents, better to record the class and send that to them. Try to team up with the parents to have their kid participate

I came here to see what an ESL teacher does and how was the classroom setting. I really like your accent in English you sounded like a computer bot and I find that cool

Loving you has different meanings in Chinese culture. Is it rude because she's a girl like you?
@TeachaKaren

I think it's more of a "Generation Z characteristic" kind of "love you". Like a meaningless expression or an expression to convey "she likes you as her teacher".

How come you don't have an accent? May I ask if you grew up in the US?

I think I do have a little accent, still working on completely eliminating traces of my beloved first language, Filipino (Tagalog). I used to work in an American outsourced company as a communication & culture trainer... maybe that's why :)
