Imitations have "soul" too you know.Every mask is special and has it's own unique charm no matter where it comes from.😊

I quite agree. I have a growing mask collection, and I do not only incluse Venetian masks, but masks of all kinds! I have a couple masks that are actually plastic and probably intended for some sort of halloween costume, but I found them so novel and fascinating I added them for my collection! I have one green and gold one with a tall green feather and tassels with sequins on the side, most likely made for the Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans, U.S.A. I have quite a few more generic masquerade masks, bought with no illusion of "authenticity" but merely their marvelous appearance, and these little wonders were what started my collection to begin with. Most of them are in the colombina style, but they all have extra flourishes that intrigue me. There are two matching feathered ones, one in silver and one in gold; I have a teal and gold one with tassals that fall down over the bottom half of the face which reminds me of an oasis in a desert; my first was a gilded black and purple with hanging lace that also covered the mouth. My favorite is a small mask covered in white feathers, except for a stroke of tawny feathers between the eyes, and a little golden beak over the nose. I need to repair it, as despite my care, I accidentally loosened the beak when coming home after a party my friend held. Ironic that I spent the whole evening taking care with the mask, only to damage it when getting out of my car! But even with a loose beak, and perhaps despite being a bit gratuitous with the feathers, (i have to take care they do not get in my eyes when i wear it) it's still my favorite. Authenticity is useful for cataloguing and records, but a mask is a mask.

Hi, Can we assume that all Venetian Masks with an 'authentic tag - Venezia' is not real? I purchased one recently via a garage sale and was told it was purchased in Venice, the painting at the front certainly looks like it was 'handbrushed' (as opposed to something in a factory) and it has a sticker on the back as mentioned in the video. Thanks

How much should you be willing to pay for a genuine Venetian mask? You don't really mention in the video? I am going to Venice in beginning of March and would like some pointers as I would like to purchase a mask as a souvenir :)

+PhantomFan1a Hi there, it really depends on the type of mask you would like to buy. A very ornate and large full face genuine mask would be between E100 and E250. A smaller 'eye' mask would be from about E30 upwards. Imitations from China will be must less.

As a person who makes masks I find this piece odd. Venetian mask making is as old as......the 1970s. Oh, there's an older tradition, but what we see today is itself an imitation of that tradition. Additionally, there are a base set of masks that look identical from shop to shop. The cat, the plague doctor, the commedia dell'arte masks etc. These are made by pressing papier mache into the same molds. The only difference between these masks and one made by pressing the papier mache into a mold with a machine is time. The machine can apply uniform pressure, insuring that the layers are all evenly fused. Even the plastic ones can be as or more sturdy than the artisinal ones. At the end of the day, if you're buying one of the traditional styles, go cheap. They're functionally no different from the higher priced versions in the artisan shops. But if you WANT an artisanal mask, take the time to buy one that the mass producers won't make. THAT is where you'll see the maskmakers true art.
