Hi, your videos are always so clear and helpful (and I, for one, enjoy the chattiness.) A question on this one though: The instructions that come with the ignition coil tester say in part: "make sure that all the plug connectors [for the coils you're not testing at the moment] are earthed; if not, this might damage the ignition system's output stage or other components..." Is this something to be concerned about using the method you demonstrate here? Thanks!

You're correct, the methodology is very easy. This makes it all the more perplexing that so many ' _mechanics_ ' at garages will tell you coils cannot be tested except by substituting for a new one❗ I often say that most mechanics aren't fit to service a walking stick and this is one of the reasons why.

Syd, when you check that the lbulb is flickering on a 4 wire coil over system, is your test light grounded externally or into the ground terminal within the coil's connector? Either way I cannot get the bulb to flicker with the starter swinging the motor? This car is 'mis firing' badly!

Cyclone Cyd; I purchased the US version of the spark tester in your links. The graduations marked on it are for kilovolts. The last mark is 40. However, the 30 kv mark is roughly 2cm. 40kv is just over 2.5 cm. You indicate in your video that a 2 cm gap should give us a 60 kv spark if large and blue. Does the manufacturer have this tool mismarked?

I remember from my Uni days that the figure is 30kV/cm (3kV/mm or 3MV/m). This article from sciencing agrees with that figure sciencing.com/calculate-30-kw-amps-7644913.html. Wiki also agrees and so does this article from the IEEE: ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/6591649 which has to be counted as a reliable source. So, YES

It should, yes. Attach the tester to the HT leads in place of the spark plugs as shown. Test all cylinders, noting the results. If one or two are 'down' then bear in mind it could be any component at fault. Swap the HT leads from a 'good' cyl to a 'poor' cyl (remembering which is which) and see if the results change on retest. You can find which components need replaced this way. Is it a single coil system or twin coil (aka wasted spark)?

@@CycloneCyd thanks Cyd. As far as I can tell it's a single spark. I check cheers. The low tension is suppkied by the electronics in the dizzy. Sent to the coil in the base of the dizzy which then distributes it to individual plug.

Quick question: can a bad coil cause a spark plug to go bad?
@CycloneCyd
3 жыл бұрын
A weak spark causes poor combustion and this in turn can cause a plug to overheat, damaging it. Fortunately spark plugs are extremely robust. So, yes indirectly. I'm not sure it could directly. That does raise a good point I should have mentioned in the video - if you find yourself having to replace coils, replace the plug too.

@@badshotuk72 under normal running vacuum is at it's greatest when idling (around -9psi, or about 4-5psi absolute). Consequently very tiny splits in hoses may only open up under these conditions. Such problems can be very difficult to find. Also check the tightness of the inlet mani screws - not unknown to work loose. Also o-rings on MAP/IAT sensors and throttle body gasket.

Doing so reduces the load on the starter and battery. Otherwise you might overheat the starter and deplete the battery too much.

@@sjgfloydrose1234 if you can, it would be a good idea to put the battery on charge after testing. Good time to change sparks as well since you're taking them out anyway (not essential, but saves effort long term if they are approaching change time anyway).

@CycloneCyd brill thanks again! If I can't put it on charge will it be good enough to go on a 30 mins drive after ? I'm gonna use the tester on my mk3 focus st tonight
@CycloneCyd
Жыл бұрын
@@sjgfloydrose1234 There is no substitute for a mains charger, or a decent solar charger if you can't. A typical cold start in a petrol 2 litre uses about 0.5Ahr from the battery and it takes the alternator 30-60 minutes to put that back. You could drive to the ends of the earth and an alternator would never fully charge the battery. They aren't designed for that.

@CycloneCyd

Ouch! You'll need a replacement coil defo. I'd contact one of the Saab breakers to get a couple of connectors with at least 150mm lead on them. Then you can cut yours off and splice the replacement connector onto your harness.

Gotta love the description basic tool. Majority or everyone else would not think this speciality tool would be described as basic. Basic means good chance you could already have it and it has mutiple usages. This tool is 3 days away by fastest shipping here’s a real help. Electrical power testing pen. Use it and because it’s dc current that is pulsing it will show the pulse and when you see a short or weaker pulse there’s your issue then test deeper before replacing as it could be a bad connection
