The alternator signals the ECM, or vehicle's computer, during charging. The EMC then controls the voltage generated at the alternator according to the electrical load determined by the ELD. This reduces engine load to improve fuel economy. A common symptom of a failed ELD are dimming headlights. Additionally, the vehicle may show a rough idle.
