Hi Mike, working on an old Elgin 2hp motor and finally got it running today. found the coil was cracked but it worked. seal it up. tried to start but still no spark? turned out the flywheel magnets had just enough rust on them, and the coil contact it wouldn't run so hit them with some sandpaper and got spark. moved on but the carb was clogged up. took it apart, cleaned and ran wire through all the holes. Fired right up and ran well. Love it when I can get these old motors to run.

Hi Mike. Why are my two mid 60's OMC 3 horse are not getting spark They got new ignition parts replaced and ran perfect. I treated the gas and ran them every year for 5 minutes and they would run great. Then I missed a year and they have not started since. Even a little ether failed to get a blip. That tells me it must be the spark. Why does this happen so often with outboards? Would taking the ignition parts apart, cleaning and putting back together fix that? Best ways to prevent this in the future? Thanks.

T Mike I got a 50hp johnson that surges in r pm and won't get over 3400rpm. I think it's sucking air from maybe a carb. I replaced stator and power pack with cdi parts and trigger with new used oem. And replaced with coils with those green Chinese ones. I cleaned the carbs multiple times and I'm gonna clean again with ultra sonic cleaner and am thinking of using gasket maker on carb instead of rubber gasket to try to solve this problem. Tell me what you think my brother and may the Lord Jesus bless you

I added a video on my channel if you want to see/hear it. Rebuilt carb, new plugs, fuel pump. Kind of stumped but after watching some videos and research I’m thinking bad coil
@@latitude42fishing7 watch my videos. Tip #1 - Spark should jump a 1/4” gap with a good tester. Tip 2 - Use a timing light to determine spark issues All this is in my videos.

T-Mike have you ever had a coil work intermittently? My 1995 70 hp Johnson will shut off at WOT sometimes and sometimes I have trouble starting it after it has been running. I had to get towed back to the launch the other day, parked the boat at home, got up the next day and the boat started right up?

Hey, this is exactly the information I am looking for. I’m trying to get my 67 Evinrude 3 horse folder running on both cylinders. These old 3 horse don’t have the inspection hole in the flywheel for adjustments. I don’t have the aluminum pointer for setting the timing. Is there a way to set the timing without special tools? That red Johnson 7.5 on the back of the Jon boat sure is a “Looker”.

The information I referred to looking for was coil testing. I do need that. The timing question is separate. Hate to buy a timing pointer to use once. Hope there’s a “close enough” method.

@@michaeljsimon Hi from across the pond. I suspect my coil on my 5 HP Yamaha 2 stroke outboard. The coil has only one primary input lead. I suspect that the second primary lead is connected to the coil mounting, which is therefore earthed to the alloy shroud around the cylinder. Am I correct ? Anyway I’m off to check the resistance as you suggest !! Great video.

Is there a way to get to the primary circuit of the coil while the engine is running for rpm tests with multimeter leads? I know I can do it with an inductive pickup on the spark plug wires but I don't have an IP as of now.

My new 2 sierra 18-5181 coils on the secondary are 10.2K. Can the coil be 10.2K? The primary winding is normally 1.7 ohms. The motor is a johnson 5hp LdL13E. The motor cuts out when the moment comes. There are two capacitors to replace because they are 0.2uF and they should be about 300uF

I tested the resistance on the coils on a 1971 9.5 Evinrude, because no spark on top cylinder. Both secondary coils (to plug attachment) tested at about 4000 ohms so good. The primary coil (for top cylinder) reads 0.3 ohms, the other coil read 0.7 ohms. Since these are less than the 1-3 ohm range, does that mean that the coils are bad?
