At 2:36, you're calling this your brake hand, but looks like you're actually pulling on the load strand. Load strand exits though the center of the hitch; brake strand is on the side, right? I think you'd want to pull on the other strand so it becomes the load strand (flipping the hitch) before tying off with the mule.

The climber is on the left. That's why I'm braking on the right at 2:36. Regardless of which way the munter flips, you always brake on the right in this setup. You can mule it off with the munter flipped either way. If I had a real person's weight during this video, the munter would have flipped over most likely before I ever got a chance to mule it off. If the munter hasn't flipped because there isn't that much weight on it, you're fine. Just mule it off anyway. When you are giving slack the load is in the middle of the hitch. When you are taking in slack the load strand is on the side. Not sure if that makes sense. We really should face time or something to make this more clear. 760-625-7115

Oh, it makes sense. Just a little hard to see in such a quick video. Thanks for the clarification!

If you see a way to make something more clear, I appreciate suggestions. I'm new at making videos. My newest video (friction hitch comparison) has an actual cameraman which is great because he zooms in and out at key moments. I think this video would be be better if I had done it with a camera person.

@@CaliforniaClimbingSchool Way to go Erik ! I have been out of full time climbing for some fourteen years (son is now fourteen), and I am in the process of updating myself with Bob Gaines new book "Advanced Rock Climbing" (2018). I am finding your videos most useful amongst the many that are out there in 'etherland' - right to the point. Mike D, Calgary, Alberta

@@titan9830 I worked for Bob Gaines for 16 years before starting my own school. I got to pick his brain on all sorts of climbing related topics and for that I am grateful. Before that I had incredible outdoor educators like Steve Van Zandt and Mark Nolan and Pete Absolon as mentors. I hit the jackpot in the mentor department I guess! Thanks for the kind words.

I know you're demonstrating, but you might want to bring attention to the very minimal grip you have on the control role while muling off. If your climber slips while holding with such a minimal grip, they're gone.

You are absolutely right. It seems so easy in my demonstration. I have been meaning to create another video of what it looks like with full weight. The brake hand grip is robust, and the technique is different.

Having read several replies you've made to comments, your humble willingness to listen to suggestions is commendable! Def someone I'd enjoy climbing with. Not that I'm like that though, lol. Good luck with your channel.

Very much so! I've been looking for a full use video of the ACT Guide utilizing all the different types of uses for it!

You probably have already seen our How to Belay from the Top with an ATC Guide video. It's only one function out of many. This subject might require 30-60 min to fully explore. Perhaps it is better to chop it up into 5 minute videos on different aspects?
