Learn to tie the Musky Glider Fly with Nick Gellerstedt from Musky Fool Fly Fishing Co. This modern musky walk the dog fly is the product of many great anglers and fly tiers pushing the boundaries of what a bucktail fly can be. This fly when tied and fished properly should walk the dog with exceptional travel and rhythm much like conventional baits such as phantoms, hell hounds, sub walks, etc. Key factors to achieve this action are due to the hook/shank platform and properly building a core of reverse tied bucktail butts. This is achieved by gradually increasing the length of butt ends with each stack of bucktail and ensuring that your rear hook is appropriately 1/3 the length of the front shank.
These flies can be fished all season long on both intermediate and sinking fly lines. That being said this fly really hits its stride in the fall when muskies start looking for bigger prey items to pack on the extra winter weight. The gliders massive profile and ability to be worked slow and methodically it the upper 1/3 of the water column makes it hard for big Muskies to resist. Recommend 12wt+ for chucking this very large piece of meat.
