Hey mate... thanks for that...I fished this rig for the first time two nights ago.... inspired by your good self in previous videos... im quite disabled and don't want to be getting up and down for whiting etc... I didn't catch but I'm happy to say all the aspects of the rig came together nicely.. the rig cast well and released each time with no tangles.. the dongles worked well and the bait building process was painless ...they cast and lasted well.... I feel all that is needed now is the presents of a fish I "want" to catch and thats all thanks too your willingness to share your hard won knowledge ... thanks for that......fish on...

Just building all my rigs for another summer of surf casting here in NZ's South Island. Inspired by your previous video on this rig and how it helps with casting large baits, I've built a few to use when fishing for West Coast Snapper 😊 Keep up the great work on the channel Billy, one of the best on KZitem

Hi Billy. Sorry but I missed the lead connection at the end. Also, I don't have many "toothy" critters around here until March. So, I'm planning on using mono hairs for the 1st few months of the year. Why? The only worms I can get my hands on are dehydrated. Also, the only live baits are clam mantles & mussels. Both very soft. I'm thinking the mono will just work better for me. Your thoughts? Thanx for posting bud.
@Billyfishing_watch

Hi Randy. the sinker just goes on the 80lb line, on a clip. It doesn't matter what you make the rig from, but the hairs work best if they not made of mono. It stretches the bait. thanks Brother 👍😁

I will start using this an dthe up and over ring rig..very informative Billy. All this seems to be working for you..Wel doenr and keep up the good work.. Just wondering what length do you make your rigs over all?? Also woulkd the ring in the up and over hook snood have to be strong a sthinking it would create a weak link in the snood?
@Billyfishing_watch
9 ай бұрын
Hi Gavin. The open over ring rig is not a big game rig. But you could catch fish up to 30 lbs. The big game rig, depending on the strength of the line you use will catch fish to several hundred lbs. Thanks Brother 😁👍

@@Billyfishing_watch Nice..I usually tend to use pulley rigs but this big game rig looks good for the cod ray tope and huss with the bow in the rig b ody keeping it away from the bait but still leaving the bait streamlined during the cast. Is this rig good for rays. the issue I see with the pulley rig is taht the bait is in constant contact with the rig body. i have seen your video on using dingle dangles for pulleys however I do use a gemini splash down clip which locks the dingle dangle in place during cast but big baits are in contact with the rig body where as with the south african/big game rig the bait isn't.
@Billyfishing_watch

Actually you don't need any fancy bait clips, they just make problems for you. Just a traditional bait clip on the lead weight, or a genie bait clip. And a rotten bottom of some type 👌

I was watching another video on how to tie a shark trace they use in South Africa using the same method with the only difference being the use wire for all the full length of trace from the hook up to the top swivel instead of tying a length of 100lb mono to the wire like you do. I am aware that is is so if a shark is on and the wire trace moves over the mono the full length of wire prevents the shark biting through the mono bit of the trace and cutting you off. I want to make this trace for mainly Tope in the Uk. Is your method safe enough from a Tope biting through or would a full length of wire straight through be safer??
@Billyfishing_watch
3 ай бұрын
The rig you mention is FMG, this stands for full metal jacket. It is completely unnecessary for tope! 50 to 60 cm bite trace, using 150lb wire . And you will have no trouble 👌

I was also thinking of tying a lighter line from the pulley bead to the sinker to act as weak link.. is that loop knot tying the wire to the mono strong enough to hod for a pull?

As an experienced South African angler I commend you for adapting our traces (rigs) for your conditions and introducing our techniques to the world. However what you refer to as our big game rig is simply our bite trace with which we target small sharks, rays and large edibles. For larger sharks we use the full metal jacket trace with hook snoods ranging from 0.5m to 1.5m depending on the species we are targeting. I recently landed a 152kg bronze whaler shark (copper) on our East Coast with the fmj trace. The fight took three hours over rocks covered with mussel beds. There is no way I would have landed the 300 pounder with a bite trace.

Hi bud. I am aware of the MFG, and the many other variations. I call it the big game rig, because of the concept behind using one continuous piece of material with as few fail points in it as possible! Unfortunately people become bored if videos are too long, so I tried to keep them as short as possible and get a message across. Sometimes things get lost in translation. Thanks for writing in, see you on the beach brother 😁👌

Hi bud. Unfortunately no! But it is one of the easiest rigs to make. Also unless you are casting very big baits like me, it is probably unnecessary.
