I'm a 47 year old woman, and I just changed my toilet's valve. I was wondering if I could do it, just to help out my husband, who today, took my place taking our son training (I was feeling under the weather) , so, I decided to do this for him, as a thank you token, I searched for a video to see how it was done, and here you were, being quick, and to the point, in less than 10 minutes, so Thank you! I did this successfully. I Feel accomplished. Lol. Greetings from México.

Quite good, but a couple of thoughts. Looks to me like your white supply line is kinked, which will be a problem. Second, all manufacturers recommend "hand tight" only. May be some folks that need help with achieving that (arthritis, age) but no more than a quarter turn. I check for leaks then when done. I take a few sheets of toilet paper, or kleenex tissue, and wrap it around the connection to see if there is a slow leak. If so I will tighten, maybe 1/8 of a turn and repeat until there is no more leak. Done this on all my plumbing repairs over last 30+ years and it saves a lot of $ and trouble. Thanks for this, much more comprehensive than the manufacturer's instructions.

Pro Tip - These Fluidmasters are great but they still tend to wear out after a few years and you gotta replace them. If you're replacing the valve with the same kind of value, you don't have to bother taking the entire old one out and detaching the supply line. Just slide the clear plastic lock collar on the post up and then slide the entire top assembly up off the bottom post. Slide the new one on to your desired height, and push the lock collar back down. Then cut your fill hose to length and attach it to the flush tube. This would also be a good time to go ahead and replace the flapper with a Korky Plus to save future headaches. Done!

Thanks for the video. I'm pretty bad at home repairs but was able to replace my toilet bowl valve in about 30 minutes. Some additional points that may help others (1) there is a washer that goes at the bottom of the valve stem and secures the valve stem with the bottom of the toilet tank. For the part that I had, the washer was in a separate plastic bag. Good thing I noticed this before tighten the various nuts. (2) the float height needs to be adjusted to the proper height or the toilet won't flush. One hint is to compare the new valve mechanism with the old and adjust the new mechanism to about the same height as the old one. (3) As an alternative to the "catch the water in a bucket approach", you can use a large sponge to remove water from the tank before you start (takes a bit longer but less of a mess on the floor). (4) Have a scissor ready to cut the plastic tube from the valve to the toilet fill thing since what comes with the replacement is usually longer than you need (5) Have some teflon tape ready in case you have a leak when re-attaching the nut at the bottom of the tank.

Thanks for the excellent video.I understand that the rubber refill tube carrying the water goes into the overflow tube (white tube in the center of the tank attached to the flush valve).I have a toilet flush tank where, when I set it up as in this demo, the water keeps seeping through into the toilet bowl, wasting water & also takes a long time to refill too.So I ended up putting the refill tube outside the overflow tube so the water does not go into the overflow tube but outside the tube. Now there is no water seeping into the toilet bowl when the tank refills.I guess this is not the how it supposed to be, but then I loose a lot of water when I put the rubber tube inside the white overflow tube. Can you please tell me if I'm doing anything wrong & why water leaks out while doing it the way you suggested? Thanks a lot.

Ok, just replaced my toilet valve with this video for the first time in my life. Having the bucket ready saved my life as my water would not completely off. The one area that I missed was that there is a washer that comes with the new valve. I initially put the new valve in without the washer and it was leaking rapidly. Then looked for the washer in the packaging and reinstalled the valve with washer and worked like a charm. Only took 15-20 min. but was intense, heavy sweating/breathing and almost passed out but happy it's done now. Thank you for this video

This is a very informative video. Thank You. I came across the running water problem and I got the solution from here. I don't think I'll be needing to replace the valve system (for now), but what amuses me, is the fact that 25 or 30 odd years ago, when I was still around 10 years old, I was able to fix the valve system completely with a Swiss Army knife. The problem back then was exactly that "sut" the stuff that is solid and gets through the filters somehow. It was so easy to take apart the system and remove the little piece of clay or whatever from in between the floater valve. Now days like you said, it's impossible to get it apart and fix it. What a shame. I know capitalism works its magic as well but it's just getting absurd. And to talk about the fact that this video is 9 years old :) Anyways... I got all the info I needed and then some :) I'm not even going to think about trying to take it apart when I get to the point of needing to, and just replace the damn thing. Hats off

My water inlet is a spiral metal type. The FluidMaster valve instructions say to use ‘existing’ cone washer here because the supplied new cone washer may leak with this sort of metal line. Mine is 40+ years old so that cone washer may need to be replaced because I have a small amount of water seepage here after the new value has been installed. Is there a special cone washer for these spiral metal inlet lines and if so, where can I get one? FluidMaster instructions just say ‘use existing washer’ instead.

I noticed that the tube was inserted a bit too far into the overflow pipe. When it is inserted to far, it will siphon water continuously into the bowl, increasing your water bills. The end of the tube should be at the top of the pipe and must always be higher than the water level.

Ive seen a few videos mentioning this problem BUT its only ONE of TWO issues. If you hear a constant hissing noise and can see a slow stream of water running in toilet like the guy showed. Then it might be the valve he mentioned OR it is the "seating washer" which is the rubber washer at the bottom of toilet that seals the exit plug. HOW TO TELL DIFFERENCE: Look to see if the toilet is leaking water down overflow pipe or if it leaks regardless. Use your hand to hold the float up so no new water should come in and if it is the "seating washer" it will slowly leak well below the overflow hole. If it is inlet seal then new water will come in even though your holding float upwards and tight

Thanks so much for this video, I have exactly the same valve and was able to adjust the float height exactly as you showed. You can’t imagine the grief I’ve had the last few weeks with the other half having to use the cold downstairs toilet !

Question - nine out of ten times we have to push down on the black screw on the fill valve for water to refill. The unit is fairly new. What do we need to do so the water refills automatically? Thank you.

This was very good. The only addition that I feel should be made is about the Teflon tape. You should make sure to put the tape on in the same direction as you will be twisting the connection on. if you put the tape on going in the opposite direction it can become unseated where you want it to be and it will not work to stop leaks by helping to create a tight seal. Other than that this video was great.
