In my experience, it's bend bend tie and bend to keep an even canopy. Just before flower, or the first week or two, supercrop and create knuckles. The key, like Chris said, is to keep it even on top. What makes it tricky is during the stretch, but that's dependant on genetics. They all don't behave the same. Best hobby in the world

Around the 34 35 minutes mark; super cropping is the word for crushing and manipulating the fibers in the stem. It is a technique made popular by SOMA of somas sacred seeds. He was the original breeder of new York City Diesel, somango , lavender, etc. but the actual crushing of inner stem fibers is defined as 'super cropping ". Like the guest mentioned, I to, will crush every single stem. I don't fold them over, but they get crushed to grow that knuckle

I have always topped my plants to keep them manageable height. My Wife wanted to let our plants this year go without any training. We now have 10' tall pine tree looking plants at the start of September that we can't defoliate the tops and upper branches of without a ladder. While guerrilla veggie garden growing in the 90's I did use what you called "No Technique" training to fit plants into a traditional garden without advertising I was growing in the squash patch. I waited until they were about 2-3 feet tall and then supercrop the main stem to get it horizontal at about 12" tall. Then I used LST to keep the branches low too. I got good yield per plant that year but had some insect problems I think because they were too close to the ground. The canopy of the surrounding squash leaves also caused some mold to develop on a few flowers.

As newbies you tend to treat them like the Crown Jewels. The truth of the matter is that they are almost indestructible.. Wait til you have 4-5 nodes then tie the top (highest) to the side of the pot. This will produce multiple ‘colitas’ reaching for the sky! I wish I could share my example… This year (uk) I’m trying sweetseeds early f1 selection and a varied assortment of approx 12 autos! Very excited… Great show. Maybe some pics here and there could help.

i have been doing bonsai for about 30yrs and recently brought my techniques to growing herb. my fave style lately has been to put your seedling into a plastic pot, notch the side out a bit and lay the seedling on its side hanging over the edge. it will curve up and grow with a bent trunk. once it hits about 10" tall i replant it into a large pot with it planted sideways. now the side branches will grow out and up with some training and you will have a bush instead of a tree. one plant will fill a 2x4 area or more and be half the height and there is almost no stress involved. (fyi, it takes a lot less work and less tying down than what you describe in the video)

@walley2637

another technique along this line would be to put your seedling in a small pot and place it into a buck full of sand. this way you can tilt it and lean it in any direction or lay it on its side so that you only have to tie it to hold it in place and let the light pull it instead of extreme bending.
@bennybenz.

@@walley2637 Ahhh notta bad idea either might have to throw that in the ol bag of tricks next time a start a new batch! The "bent raft style" as you put it works perfectly for me and my small grow area as I'm only able.to use a closet no bigger than 30"×30"ish and like 6ft+ in height! So that being said I love this method and dont see myself doing it any other way even when I expand my grow area!!! Thank you so much for talking about topping. I am a first time grower and started with two plants. One is taller and slimmer than the other that is shorter spread out. I wondered about cutting off the top 6 inches from the taller one but felt hesitant. The plant is about 5 feet 8 inches and 2 months old. Excited about topping it now whereas I felt nervous and uncertain before. Hailing from Trinidad and Tobago here. Great videos.

One of my buddies got me started on another indoor/outdoor grow so I continued where I left off with soft training the main stalk with a Bonsai wire to gently bend it without breaking. I also keep bending branches daily from veg into a bit of flower to make a relatively flat form. The plants stay stubby with close internode spaces & tight chunky buds. Thanks for an informative video I can give to my first canna-student.

I'm your 90° bend guy ... that's all I do. I "whip" the main branch, mimicking a wind storm, back and forth until I can feel the fibers separating and the stem becomes rubbery. I then manipulate until the top is where I want it, then walk away. The other branches come up on their own. This technique can bring my time per plant spent manipulating down to less than 5 minutes per plant. When you have more than a hundred plants to care for, this technique is golden ...

@32:ish- I've done that to a 3ft tall hemp plant outdoors- tied twine near the top and tied it off to a shovel head, bending it over to about a foot off of the ground, the main turned back to vert in about one day but the lower branches also began to grow upward...I let it go for about two weeks then topped all 8 or so of those branches a few days ago after they had at least two nodes per branch...looking like it will end up with at least 16 tops without and additional training. I never would have guessed I'd be playing with ditch weed at my age. Very nice vid btw, thank you!

I just finished watching your chat and you were talking about how do you tie to fabric pots. I went to my local hardware store and for under $10 bought a gromit punch hand tool. The gromit has about a 1/8th" size center hole. Use the punch to make the hole in fabric and then put the gromt in the hole and use the punch tool to crimp down the gromit. Works great. I put mine about a inch down. You could also use larger gromits too but might need a hammer to crimp those over. Oh, Grow On!!!

Absolutely correct from my experience. Stress them early. From the second node set start blowing them with fans like a storm rolling thru. Plants nature strengthens the main stalk which supports and feeds the entire plant. Twist them secondary branches to mimick the same. Big roots, big trunks equal bigger buds and maximum weight. Works extremely well. Pigeons knows his shit here. 👍 Great video for everyone.

I learned how to fim in the late 90's. We were getting 3 to 5 new sprouts of growth just by leaving 20 to 30% of the plant (stem) that you're about to top but don't cut to close to the branches below. Whatever the size where you're going to top leave about 20 or 30% and I guarantee you'll like the results if done properly. very cool experiment to run a few times and you'll gain mad colas!!!

Hey Chris, I do FIM consistently, i usually top my plants 2 times then FIM then it’s done for that type of training, if you’d like I can do a how to video with before and after results. There is technically an exact place to do an FIM, I’m not sure what the part is called but I’ll point it out clearly in the video. I also do the “no training” stress training as well. I use it for more of a bonsai concept to growing but as pigeon said, yes, there is some bottom branch maintenance does still need to happen. Coupling it with tying down and super cropping all branches has produced great results though and it does help with keeping the canopy even.

I , have thee, best training method. I learned it from a crippled old cannabis farmer in cali. he didn't teach me it ,but a good observation and a open mind allowed me to store all knowledge gained from the experienced grower. this technique does not require any stress training, topping, lsd etc. nothing. it just shoot colas on it's own nonstop through out the entire growth. the only downside to this technique is you'll find yourself chopping off alot of beaches because of the uncontrollable shoots of colas but this secret you will not have nor do I not seen it anywhere on the internet

ok i have a concept i want to try, you bend the plat at 90 but it will have an anchor apparatus that runs from the pot along horizontally making as a runner for branches to grow from using the natural undergrowth as crowns while using super cropping to control the growth rate for an even canopy, this would also be AMAZING under Scrogg nets.

Plastic hangers with hooks are great. Cut the top and the bottom off so it looks like a boomerang. Then you cut right after the hooks and use a flame to bend the hook inwards. Now cut that in half. 2 big hooks to hold down branches

I cracked plants to 90 degrees. When they reached their 6/7 internode I would bend it to 90 between the 1st and 2nd. They took a week or so to recover but in that time all the bud sites would turn up towards the light. Always got excellent results, I believe (I may be wrong) that hormonally the whole plant is then seen as the top pf the plant, resulting on all bud sites packing on weight. I was very restricted in space though so not sure if I would do it otherwise. Definitely a technique for the arsenal though.

Soft rubber garden ties work great for a dollar you get 16 feet in a roll.. 1 way start LST very very early is to take a tie and wrap the top leaves up a lil bit and leave em for a couple days. Itll allow alot of light to hit the side shoots much sooner . So when it comes time to top at say the 5th or 6th node back to the 3rd or 4th I usually have 8 tops almost immediately. Paper clips slide very easy on fabric pots and allow for the shoots to pull a bit. And training your plant with a combination of topping and LST can double your yeild vrs no training. Like Pigeons said these plants are Resilient.

@@GardenTalkwithMrGrowIt you're very welcome. I throughly enjoy this new forum you've been doing lately. I hope you keep it going. I think someone else suggested already but I know alot of people really enjoyed Grateful Growers videos he did a few years ago. And would like to know what and how hes been doing. If you could get him to host a show with ya that be spectacular. Last I heard he's been doing Christian faith based blog. I don't know if its cannabis related or not but I'm sure alot of people would appreciate him stopping by. Thanks again for all you do.

On my first grow, I am using the extra long veg state of the local Sativa to practice, getting a canopy from an original Xmas tree should be good practices. Learning a lot from my failures, using laundry pins to fix a few broken tops from my LST 😂

Plastic clothes pegs, spring type, are great for holding the stems down after bending. They also double as weights which will help build strength and being bright colours you won't forget about them

I LOVE F.I.M.!!! Works on most strains, yet not all... I do it at 9"-12", or 4th to 5th node. Remove 75-80%; on avg. 6+ tops pop up...then LST all the way

Hell Yeah, Pigeons420 is an awesome Grower! I know most folks would love to see Mr. Cunuks grow and VaderOG on the show. We saw Rob on the show, but what about Trey? He is a wealth of knowledge. Would love to see a conversation on the perfect cure, and how to get there.

I love fimming. I topped half and fimmed half last year and I prefer to fimm, so far

just to add to the fiming of the plant what happens is the plant will split into 3 main stems instead of just the two you get from topping alone you get the bennifit of the split plus the main shoot will keep on going up the middle and the fiming will also send more auxins wtich are horemones to the lower growth causing an explosion of growth.. more than just what you would get from topping alone so in my experience this is a better option for getting the most bang for your buck so to spek! i hope this helps clairify or add to this subject a little bit more .
