When I was on SWAT , we would load each other’s magazines on training days and insert dummy rounds at random intervals in each other’s mags. It breaks the routine and muscle memory of reloads when you are attuned to transitioning and/or reloading at pre-determined intervals (round counts) the unknown variable of having your weapon go “click” instead of bang works wonders on your reload game. I would highly recommend it to any one who wants to add an unknown variable to their training regiment

Yup. 1R1's just induce a training scar. Reloads are either intentional or emergent. If it's emergent, you're not expecting it by definition, so you should not expect it in training. 1R1's don't help because you're expecting to reload after 1 round so you never train a reflex. I found the best way to train reloads is to just load random amounts in different magazines. Anywhere from 25-30 or 2-5, depending on what I'm doing.

Exactly. Idk when it changed, but that's how I was trained when I was coming up. 1R1 drills are only good for one thing- building the muscle memory for reloading. People focus on the drill while forgetting what the overall intention is- improving preformance *IN THE FIGHT.* If all your doing is 1R1 drills, then you'll look great on KZitem, but when push comes to shove, you're going to choke. You don't rise to the occasion, you fall to the level of your training. It's the main reason I've never taken 3 gun comps seriously. Range work is great, but unless you are also applying it practically, you're only getting half the benefit.

I usually randomize how many rounds are in a given mag, and work from there. Could be 1, could be 5, could be 15 or even full. When you work from a set number every time, you build the muscle memory for that amount of rounds. Subconsciously, you start counting how many rounds are left and prepping for that LRHO. In a real fight, especially if you've been doing tac reloads the whole time, you're not going to have that full mag all the time, nor are you going to be able to hold that count all the time, every time. Randomizing the round count during training will help break that mental prep, and simulate the surprise and chaos of an actual fight. Especially if you time it for added pressure. You might be in the middle of engaging a set of targets and you run dry... do you switch to your sidearm to finish the set, or do you reload right then and there? Either is viable, and both have pros as well as cons. 1R1 drills are only useful for building muscle memory. They have almost no practical application by themselves. People get to locked into doing these drills and forget the overall picture- increasing your performance in order to be more effective in the fight. It's the same dichotomy that appears in martial arts- training form over function, and vice versa. If you can't apply it practically, then why make it your focus?

So as I'm shooting at any time I can either run dry, and reload, or have a "malfunction" and have to tap/ rack ECT and also make sure to properly identify the issue. Not counting any actual malfunctions that may occur (pretty rare tho, hence the setups for them) Some mags may have 29, some may have 21 or 14 or even only 5-6 so it's entirely random and those reloads just pop up randomly. 1R1’s were never meant to be concentrated on the shooting, it was meant to be concentrated on the manipulation in reloading while having some shooting, that’s why it’s called an isolated drill. You really don’t need to perform 1R1’s to get good on reload manipulation, you can do dry fire for that, but like I always say, you can do dry fire all day long but when you go to the range live, that’s totally a difference experience. Now, when your good manipulating your reloads and your 1R1’s, then you can start doing the drills shown in this video, that way you can get a more “combat” effective training, where your shooting & marksmanship is your priority but you reloads are still present on your drills.
@RaphYkun
2 жыл бұрын
I guess the argument is what is the benefit of 1R1 over dry fire if you're isolating for the reload. You say it's a different experience when you go to the live range, but they showed a kid that literally only ever had airsoft experience had manipulation down pat at the live range.
@zboy6577
2 жыл бұрын
@@RaphYkun actually I’m glad you brought the air-soft . Trex arms made a video about airsoft and firearms where he brought a kid from another country, who couldn’t own firearms and all he did was airsoft. The weapons manipulation aspect the kid was spot on he was manipulating all firearms like an operator, but on the shooting not so well, at the beginning he struggled and then later on the video he got good at it, and thats my point. When you transition from dry fire to live fire, your adding other factors that were not present when dry firing. That’s where 1R1’s is useful, your still isolating the drill to concentrate on manipulation but your adding the other factors by live firing. Maybe for me and you it’s not a problem or we already move from that stage because we have shot thousands of rounds and had performed multiple drills, but the person that hasn’t gotten to that level yet and still wasting bullets on the flat range, this is a good insight before moving to 2-5R5’s Thanks for the comment!
@zboy6577

@NorseBishop I totally agree 100% but my think is that everything you practice on dry fire you must practice it on live fire. When you at the range, live firing, there are other factors involved that were not present when dry firing. But I do agree with your comment 100%. Thanks

I bring enough mags that you never have to load any at the range lol. You should have 20-30 mags at least (in my personal opinion lol) I got a big bag of em that I load up randomly the night before with anywhere from 5-29 rounds and also I put random snap caps as well to induce "malfunctions" that I have to diagnose rather than reloading. Really helps a lot with that processing and problem solving. Sometimes they feed so it's just a tap/rack, sometimes they DONT feed and induce malfunctions. So it's random and I enjoy the reps and problem solving.

Жыл бұрын
I think your overall point is valid and well received. The 1R1 drill is really meant to be a specialized tool practicing a very niche specific technique and not anything more than that. If people are taking it as more than that then there's a problem. I Do think it has a purpose and I think You're applying the technique in the wrong circumstances which is in part why you seem to think the drill is not useful. Recall that this is practicing an emergency reload. Emergency reloads are conducted under duress and in exigent circumstances where time is of the utmost importance. The more proximate a threat is, and the more precise their fires, the more exigent the circumstance. If a threat is at 100 or 200 or 300 yards, there's no reason to use this technique. Unless exposed in the open or taking extremely precise fire as previously stated. So your criticisms of the drill not allowing you to practice good marksmanship and control are somewhat misguided. If you're in a fight that affords you the time to be extremely precise, then you have the time to use a different reload technique. This technique is for the fight where you have no time. Your other criticism seems to be that when conducting this drill at full speed you didn't get a proper grip on the follow-up shots. It would seem that that means the drill does not ingrain or give you the chance to practice good marksmanship. That's not necessarily the case either. If you're moving so quickly in the drill that you aren't maintaining good control over your weapon in the name of beating the timer, then you're moving too fast, period. That's not a problem with the technique that's a problem with you. I think the emergency reload drill is an important thing to practice and it zeros in on a very precise skill. It shouldn't be done to excess or neglecting other drills that combine multiple techniques. But it also should be understood in the correct light and not judged based on situations and circumstances that it was not meant to be used in.

I love this!! I Definitely need to practice ALL OF IT! Great stuff man 👍🏻 I also dig those 4 runners in the background 😉 keep up the great videos Lucas. I have watched your older pistol shooting videos multiple times. Especially the one on “how to shoot a piston in 10 minutes” easily watched it more then a dozen times 😂

One thing I love about the 1-and-1 is you reset it with a tac mag; arguably the most important reload to train.

Missing the point of the 1R1. It’s a familiarization of the manual of arms and getting better at reloading with the caveat of a minimal ammo availability. Now if you are living firing a 1R1 draw a 2” circle and do a sub R1R under 5 seconds or 4 seconds at 5-7yrds. If you start getting better and are getting faster draw a 1” circle and try doing that same time. The 1R1 isn’t essentially to get just faster but to get better at shooting with a added difficulty. Speed without accuracy is worthless.

part of the manual of arms is re-attaining a proper shooting position. this doesn't become apparent in 1R1, becomes a lot more apparent when you're recoil control goes to shit and your subsequent shots are slower and/or less accurate. 3-R-Failure or 3-R-Hammer(switch)Hammer are great drills to really see how well you dismount the gun, reload, and *properly* remount the gun

T.REX ARMS so Lucas and the T.Rex arms account has replied to me. Why not just Lucas? Someone from the social media department has to jump in on the conversation to validate Lucas’s point? This is pretty much the equivalent to “hey bro, I need you to comment on my post to validate my opinion”. Weak. You’re better then this my dude.

A good hybrid of the 1R1 I would do is set up 5 targets. Each target is marked 1-5, and you have a friend shoutout what numbers they want you to shoot. For example, they could call out “2, 4, 3” and you would shoot target 2, reload, then shoot targets 4 and 3. It’s still cost effective, and you get the basic training and reps for all marksmen requirements.

I like the concept of the drills. I’ve done 1R1 for carbine and pistol in the past.One thing for me is not always ending the drill with going to safe and dismounting carbine or going to holster for pistol,but going to trigger reset first.

Never did 1R1. I always load random amount of amount of rounds in mags so I DON'T know when the reload is coming. If you do 1R1, you KNOW when to reload and are just waiting to speed run through that process and I think that's a training scar because now people are anticipating a reload EVERY time they pull the trigger. So I only get to the reload in a random time instead of knowing every 5 rounds or every 10 rounds. Because shit happens in a real fight and the gun could go down after 1 shot and you need to train yourself for IF it happens and we don't know WHEN it happens.

Unpopular opinion, practicing super quick reloads for rifle is a waste of time. If you blow 28-30 rounds and you need to reload, do it under cover or switch to your sidearm. Now I’ll wait for all the “tacticool” kids living in moms basement to tell me I’m wrong

Bro you have extreme skills the way you hold your rifle and present it when you’re ready to fire and the reloads are amazing it’s flawless the way you do it just pure amazing I’m trying to get good at it too I have muscular dystrophy so it’s a little bit difficult for me to move really fast but I try and try I just need some training hopefully one day I’ll be able to afford to go take some classes and get good like you I love watching your videos do you really know what you’re doing I take your advice very seriously when you’re showing how to operateThanks for the videos and I hope you continue to make more

In my opinion. The best thing you can do for speeding up reloading from your armor is don't. Run 1 or 2 mag pouches on your belt and when/ if you have the time while being engaged in a fight is to move the full mags from your vest to your empty pouches on your belt for future reloads. Obviously this only works when you have the "down time" to do so.

I do ?R?'s... Randomly load mags and shuffle. Expecting the bolt/slide lock taints the results. To me this always seemed like a good addition to shooting after running or a short exercise. Learning how to respond when you can't fully expect how to respond. No matter how much you train, everyone will have a situation where no matter how much they practiced counting rounds, that goes completely out the window

Couldve used this video sooner! I was just out in the woods this afternoon, but when I do reloads, i use one mag w/ 2 rounds, and keep a full 30 round mag on my person. So I'll shoot a controlled pair, reload, and shoot another controlled pair. Thanks for posting this, very educational, learned something the Marines never taught me.

Exactly right. If you want, do some 1r1 to get the fluidity of the reload down, but there's no need to run it every range session. If you're training as much as you should you get PLENTY of chances to train emergency reloads. But NEVER forget the tactical importance of the tactical reload!

Music at the end made me think of a new dynamic in some modern-day military game: have an enemy that your squad regularly engage with on battlefields, and he eventually picks off your teammates over the course of the game that you've 'bonded' with. Would make it very personal and intense, rather than some nebulous string-puller 'man behind the curtain' enemy you only interact with once.

I figure ingraining the process of reloading is neat, but when you're fully expecting the need to reload already whats the point? If you already know you will need to reload, you should top off with a new magazine. I think range practice where you throw in random numbers of rounds or dummy rounds to require presence of mind would create better habits of situational awareness.

In bad situations habit and training have a way of being bad news if you train wrong. In WW2 if you had a malfunction during Basic Infantry Training if you needed help with you laid down your rifle, stood up and raised your hand. The US military had to rethink their training after troops did this in middle of firefights in Europe and the Pacific.

As a LEO in South East Texas my nears back up is at least 10 mins away, so I carry a PMAG60 as my primary magazine for my patrol rifle and l have a standard PMAG with a TTI extended mag on my duty belt, I have extended TTI mag extensions for my duty mags. In my opinion TTI mag extensions make a great tool for reloads and carrying extra ammunition. As the firearms instructor for my department l convinced the department to carry extended magazines on duty.

Take your mags load varying amounts into each, drop them all in a bag and shake it about. You now have a genuine reload training aid because you have no idea when that mag will run dry, you don’t get to preempt the reload and having to make multiple follow up shots will force you to adapt to go back to proper grip. Of course this requires you owning a few matching mags but it’s so much better than single round start points in a real scenario most people won’t be able to round count, if you shoot enough to run dry and need to keep shooting it’ll more than likely be a surprise to you, get used to needing to reload without expecting it.

I never did the 1R1... just like I do not use shoot timers.... why would I train my mind to wait for a beep or train a muscle memory of a 1R1. I have always randomly loaded mags or have my buddies or my wife load my mags that have a random amount of ammo or snapcaps to simulate a malfunction/ empty mag reload... I'm there to train for accuracy and working under random situations. Not to see how tactical I can be under a controlled environment.

When I was in MARSOC we did something similar we would run a double tap drill with 3 targets different distance while moving back and forth between 3 postions. We would load each other's mags with a random amount of ammo and dummy rounds. It forces you to deal with random events
