The trail runs have proven to be so important for my builds. As a dad to a toddler who also started a new business with my wife two years ago, time is a big variable for me. Strength training used to keep me niggle free but I just can’t program as much as I used to - trail running is the perfect “Diet Coke” strength and conditioning for me. I transitioned (over 18 months) to barefoot shoes on the trails which add many more layers of benefit.

Loved the format of this episode! It’s been fun seeing the editing evolve since you started the channel. I love raw footage but I enjoyed the voiceovers with it. I constantly feel like I’m learning from these while I still like watching like a documentary for entertainment. You’re going to have a great race at Berlin!

Trails are a godsend, I run an 8 day cycle 6 day’s running 2 days recovery and I’ll hit the road for my intervals and long run, the other 4 runs are done on trails, 3 will be relatively flat and 1 is steep, this steep trail run is left till day 8 and is followed by a recovery day, great strength workout.

Nice set. Will try that. I use track for typical 800s , 1k reps type above threshold....but i think this marathon type of running on outside of track and do the marathon once efforts (3k, 5k reps type of thing...but will use this 2k also now with that type of recovery). Track allows for that pace setting, rhythm. Good for city marathons like Berlin, valencia...

I know you kind of train on the fly but have key stuff you want to get done. What are those key sets per week you would like to get done? What would be a good week? Like do you get a: - key set 1 track day in (e.g. 1k reps). - key set 2 A marathin pace efffort day (e.g. your 2k set in video), - key set 3 speed or something spicey day in, like speed or 8x 600 hill reps). Key 4 - Long run day (but youbdo these upper aerobic, tough enough). Rest days are easy.

Do you think it is worth getting a lactic acid test kit if you are a slower runner? or is relying on heart rate more suited for those of us far from sub-elite?

I'd say running to feel is probably better than both of those until a certain level (and that level is fairly high) keep your eyes peeled for next week's video. Matt's got some great insights on using data

FYI - Not very smart idea to mix Threshold with Vo2max in the beginning period of preparation… start with just 1 threshold session per week, adapt, then add 2nd workout, adapt then do mixed session with Vo2max, that would be smart way to do it.

Training trails for a marathon is a baad idea. I broke my foot doing that! Don't do it!

thats why they say "brake it until you make it" 😉 you know that allmost EVERY KENIAN RUNNER does it all the time. so it's probably not such a bad idea (unless you have terrible body mechanics).
