Start with basic ques such as sit, stay, come and lie down. These ques are great for safety and control and allow you to communicate effectively with your dog in different situations and environments. Be patient, use positive reinforcement and reward your dog with treats, praise, or play when they respond correctly.
If for example you are teaching your dog to sit you want to lure and mark the behaviour that you want so you can get them in the correct position.
So if I were to get Hamish to sit I would hold the food up over his nose to get him to go onto his bum and say my que which is sit and as soon as he’s in the correct position I say “yes” which is my mark and immediately reward.
That way he’s learning his que which is sit but he’s also learning that the word ‘yes’ means he is doing the right thing.
We have lots of in-depth training modules in our online Pet Parenting courses about training, communication and much more if you’re looking for further information on these topics.
Establish a Consistent Routine:
Dogs thrive on routine, so creating a consistent training schedule will help them learn. Short but regular training sessions are more effective than long sessions. If you aim for one to two sessions of 10-15 minutes each day your dog can understand and retain training cues much easier.
Positive Reinforcement:
Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool in dog training. Use rewards such as treats, verbal praise, and even play to reinforce desired behaviours. Whenever your dog obeys a cue or exhibits good behaviour, provide immediate positive feedback. This encourages them to associate the cue with a positive experience which will reinforce their desire to repeat the behaviour.
Corrective Measures:
While positive reinforcement is essential, it’s also important to address unwanted behaviours with appropriate corrective measures. This does not involve punishment or harsh methods but rather redirecting their behaviour or using a stern ‘no’ cue to discourage undesirable actions. For example it could be jumping up at a visitor when they come to the house and you can redirect this behaviour by making them sit instead, focus on redirecting their attention to an acceptable alternative and rewarding the desired behaviour.
Socialisation:
Socialisation is crucial to help your dog become comfortable in different environments and around other people and animals. Expose your dog to various experiences, such as meeting new people, different smells, and experiencing different sounds and environments. Positive socialization can help reduce fear, anxiety, and aggressive behaviour.
Patience and Consistency:
Training takes time, and every dog learns at its own pace. Be patient, remain consistent with your training methods, and remember that progress may take some time. For example, at the moment I am trying to teach Hamish to allow me to clip his nails and this has been a 3 month process but we are getting better and better with each session. And as frustrating as training can be sometimes it’s important to not punish otherwise you may hinder your dog’s learning process or damage the relationship you are trying to build with them.
So, if you or your dog start to get frustrated just stop and come back to the training session at a different time.
Mastering the basics of dog training is a crucial step toward building a strong bond with your dog. By understanding training techniques, starting slowly with basic cues, establishing a consistent routine, using positive reinforcement, and addressing unwanted behaviours appropriately you can lay the groundwork for a well behaved and happy dog.
Remember that training is an ongoing process that requires patience and consistency resulting in a rewarding and fulfilling partnership between you and your dog.
