love that your using a breed to the heavier side. In my experience with heavier horses people seem to think they cant do they same riding as other breeds. which is false obviously, they are great riding horses :)

Ok, this explains why horses don't just jump out of their fields. I never knew jumping was so foreign to horses. You did well to train the horse in only 8 minutes.

Typically, fences are built higher than the horses can jump. And they're often electric, as well. Those are probably the primary reasons. :P

Its great to use positive methods on training. I came across a lot of horses that just wouldn't jump so their owners got them "TRAINERS" I've seen trainers treat horses badly making jumping unpleasent. Thats how I would train my horse (I dont have one but thats how I imagine it) short learning sessions treats and fun thats how every horse should be learning things.

This is amazing! I've just recently got an Arabian Shetland pony, and he seems to enjoy jumping, but inside of the arena, he refuses. But thanks to this video, I understand why he won't jump in the arena. It is because he notices the arena as a place to work, though we usually play together on the ground. So, I've learned that I need to have extreme patience with him, and allow him to slowly and confidently work his way to learning to jump. Thank you so much!

Start at the beginning - you and your pony have to help each other build confidence and trust in each other. So do the things you're good at already (walking, trotting?) and give her praise - and give yourself praise too! Lots of people can't do those things (I meet them all the time). Next do something you're both learning - and push yourselves just a little every day. Don't take big steps - take small steps but be happy that you are making progress. You don't need a teacher - but if you could save up for one lesson at least you could learn a lot. Best of luck!

@WayOutWestx2
4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, That's a tricky one to answer without seeing you two together. The rule of thumb is if you don't feel safe don't do it. Horses are big and heavy and if there's any chance she might take you for a horse companion and want to horse-play with you, you are at risk of getting injured as they usually play very rough with each other. When you start working with a horse at liberty (no rope or reins) you need to establish a few ground rules before you work at faster speeds. When your horse follows you she should not be allowed to touch you, nip you with her mouth or push you in any way, and she should immediately stop if you stop. A horse that is following you as a submissivie gesture holds her head low and ears to the side, a horse that follows you because she wants to play tends to hold her head up higher with ears pointed forward. A horse that is mad at you and seems to act it out on you has not learned to respect you and should not be anywhere near you because that is dangerous. I hope this makes sense to you and helps you a little bit. Stay safe!

Sounds like he just needs lots and lots of patience and reassurance. Ride him till he's comfortable and then start jumping him again - but like he was a beginner. Tiny jumps at first, with lots of breaks in between. He has to learn to trust you and you can't rush that. Good luck!

Why would you want to train a horse to jump? The higher the jumps and the more frequently they are done often results in long term joint, ligament, and tendon damage.
@WayOutWestx2
5 жыл бұрын
Do you always jump to tedious extremes, Gerry? They so easily lead to longterm foolishness. One of our horses doesn't much like jumping - so we never ask her to. The other two love it, and so do I. Perhaps once a month, for twenty minutes, or so. We'll see what longterm effect that has on them and on me - but for the years we've been doing it, it's been good for us all. (Don't try it yourself though. You might enjoy it.)

Don't jump horses. It hurts them mentally and physically very badly. Horses hate jumping.
