Awesome tutorial. I tried Musescore and thought "oh come on, so much need of the mouse, it's a pain". But seeing you work around it 80% keyboard and writing the sheet really helps to give it another try.

Excellent tutorial man, thank you! I was just looking for something like this as I'm venturing into Musescore for the first time out of need. I have an upcoming gig where it'll be handy to bring my own charts so I don't have to rely on memory alone. Cool song as well!

Good one, I could never wrap my head around Musescore... Lately I have been doing all of my edits in Reaper. Interestingly, Musescore will allow you to import midi so you can quickly score any midi you recorded, I would like to see this being offered as a plugin you can use in any DAW.
@demonicsweaters

Yeah, that would be really cool. The problem with midi import, especially with drums, is the result is usually a pretty big mess. Cleaning it up can be a bigger pain in the ass than just rewriting it, 😄

@@demonicsweaters It would probably be best to have each drum on a separate midi track so as not to confuse the algorithm. Give it a few more years, I am sure they will get midi transcription perfected. Audio to midi conversion can be done without hardware (in real time) these days and it keeps getting better. Some could argue these types of advancements are great bedroom mixing, while studio professionals might consider them detrimental to 'true musical art'. They do not make music like they used to LOL!

Thanks for the vid. Out of curiosity why do you use notate your kicks along the bottom using seperate note legs/stems instead of using the existing notation bars along the top?

Great advice. After seeing your video I was prompted to give up my hand transcribing and try Musescore - March 2023. Problem is, though, that Musescore 4 has been "upgraded" and no longer corresponds to your tutorial. I was especially excited to see your use of ghost notes since they are so prevalent. Can you give advice on how to create them in Musescore 4? Inspector no longer exists. It has been replaced by Programming which does not seem to allow the note by note adjustment that Inspector does. Am I missing something?

You can actually still download MuseScore 3 which I recommend. 4 is still very buggy and not very usable.

@@demonicsweaters Yes I've noticed the buggyness. I was considering downloading the older version, but I wanted stubbornly to find how to do it on 4 if possible. Well, I did find how to change the velocity of individual notes. Click on the note, then go to Properties, click on Playback and then Velocity appears. I've been working on Savoy Truffle which is all about ghost notes and now I have it sounding and looking good, especially that snare dribble intro which is the key to the rest of the song, drum-wise that is. Sometimes you can use the Grace note pallet, but sometimes it's better to divide the notes into 16s or 32s to get just the right time and then decrease the velocity. Thanks for your reply and for your video because I can see that working out the notes on Musescore has already advanced my understanding more than my chicken scratch hand notes, which were more memory jogs rather than real transcribing.

Thanks for your help w/Musescore. I created a score that when it plays back I intend record through Audacity, create loops that I can practice along to. Do you do anything like that. btw, thanks for your very fast reply, it was much appreciated. Do you use "count-notes-beat"?
@demonicsweaters

what is 'count-notes beat'?

@@demonicsweaters I thought it is supposed to write the count above the bars, 1+2+...1e+a2....I have not had much luck w/it. I did use ctrl +t then I write it in, I just like the idea of it doing it for me. thx 4 replying. As far ad Audacity goes, I am trying to create practice loops so I can sit @ my kit and loop whatever I can create on Musescore.

Hiya, great tutorial! How do I control the length of an open hi-hat? I'm trying to transcribe a song which makes a distinction between letting an open hi-hat hit ring and closing it a semi-quaver later. How do I get this to play in musescore?
@demonicsweaters
Жыл бұрын
In that case I would use hi hat pedal notation.

@@demonicsweaters ive been having a look into this since. Am I right in saying this is purely notational and would not affect the sound produced? Is there a way to get it to work with sound?

@@demonicsweatersApologies, I think I misread your comment. I discovered this myself today, ugh, if only I knew how to read. It's a bit annoying that the normal + and o articulations don't work but I'm glad at least the pedal trick works fine. The pedal shut noise is a bit obnoxiously loud so I have to change the velocity of those notes individually, but otherwise it works a treat. Thank you!

Hi, would you be wiling please to make a tutorial on how to route speakers/headphones audio using pavucontrol into any app that you want to use that has support for inputing audio?
@demonicsweaters

I don't really use Linux these days, but you'd really want to be using Jack for this kind of purpose. Pavucontrol is really just like windows audio mixer and doesn't really do that kind of thing. Check out Unfa, he's the linux audio master on KZitem. kzitem.info

Midi information doesn't translate so well to notation (as you found out). Its best to just write it out manually. Cleaning up from midi is more time consuming.
