This is way overcomplicated vs just using Target Disk Mode. Hold the T key down on your old Mac while powering it up. Then hook a Thunderbolt Cable from one Mac to the other. You will now see the old Mac's SSD mounted like a external drive on the new Mac. Quick and Simple, none of this IP address bs.

Wow. I'm a little disappointed in Apple for this. This should be a 3 step thing. 1. connect cable. 2. press some button to establish bridge on either mac. (with login) 3. confirm handshake on other mac (with login) done. Why did Apple make this so complicated? I'd rather just transfer to a usb stick, than go through all of that... C'mon Apple you're better than this.

because this is nothing more than putting up an network. you can do the same on most devices with an internet kable or an male usb to male usb cable.

Authentication. I don't want any fool with a cable able to suck down anything or everything on the system. But it is easier than this. There's no need to know the IP address, just browse the network and it will show up. Connect, authenticate, use. That's all there is to it.

Thanks for this informative video. I have followed the instructions multiple times and I am not able to connect my 2 MacBook Pros. When I Connect to Server, I receive the following error message: "There was a problem connecting to the server "169.254.xxxxx" (where the xxx is the correct IP address of the MacBook Pro). There are no shares available or you are not allowed to access them on the server. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem". Note: I am the system administrator on both MB Pros. I also turned off FileVault on both MB Pros as I read in the below thread that the connection will not work with FileVault ON. Thank you in advance for your help!

One thing I do enjoy about usb c, you can do just about ANYTHING with it. I do still miss the magnetic charger from the older Macbooks. If Apple could somehow make a usb c charging cable connection magnetic then I would be in love with usb c but until then

That's correct, but 10 Gbit/s are about 1,25 GByte/s (ignoring some Overhead of TCP).. The transfer in the video is about 16 seconds, so 3 GByte in filesize is about ~187 MByte/s which is about 1,5 Gbit/s, so it's pretty slow for a 10 Gbit connection. They should redo the whole transfer with JumboFrames set.. that can increase the speed extremely

SMB that 9to5 used to connect (for some strange reasons) does not work well on OSX as its based on Samba. They should have used AFP instead.....

Thank you Jeff - I cannot BELIEVE I was ignorant of this. When people teach me mac stuff like this (moving data quickly) it's RARE - and for that, I'm always doubly appreciative! I did recently purchase (forgot name) NVMe external drive enclosure... and I have a picture of me transferring a drive to a new retina 15" (faster SSD than 13) and it did 130GG (yes, bytes) in about 40 seconds. It did just under 3GB/s. SERIOUSLY. :D The enclosures like $440 - and then it's not the most elegent system for installing drives... but it works! I also now have a 2TB SSD in my retina 2015 getting read speeds of 2800MB/s. :D

Hey, just a quick note, slightly unrelated but your video helped me figure out using the ethernet port for my late 2009 Imac 27", an HP Mini USB C dock, and a cat5e cable, allowed me to connect the two computers to transfer large video files for editing on my wife's 2017 macbook via the dock with the Ethernet cable.

What a pain! I remember back in the power pc days, I used to have an app that would copy files across computers with a single mouse and drag and drop. I could use a single keyboard and mouse with both machines if I wanted to. Connection was done automatically over the Internet. I miss that app!

Is there any limitations on the size or the amount of data to transfer at once? I have a backup machine and I ry to keep it as close to an exact copy of my main machine. My original backup died a few weeks back so I've been doing the dreaded AirDrop method of trying to transfer over about 300+ GB of files.

File transfers are limited to the read and write speeds of the medium (SSD) you are transferring between + overhead. Would be cool if the OP transfered between 2 RAM-disks, that would be even faster transfers

+Jesper Andersson the Read / Write speeds of the new MBP SSD is the fastest you can get on a laptop with 3,1 GBytes/s read and 2,1 GBytes/s write. So more than enough to be way faster than the 100Mytes/s of a GBit Ethernet connection.

So, the MB on the right is the server (old MacBook) and the one on the left is the new MacBook you're transferring to, got it. For other noobs like me, @2:12 if I click 'Finder' the 'Go' menu he mentions is visible up top.

I like my mac, but these tutorial never work. Nothing happens when I select the bridge. No auto IP. Migration assistant takes 24 hours and I have no music or videos. Mac is great in many ways, sucks is so many others.

I know this is an old video now in 2022, but it still is valid it seems and some of what you showed now happens automatically by MacOS, but what stinks is that it depends on the kind of things you're transferring. I can send 9 files which are movies and add up to 11 gigs in just a few min. But I have a 6 gig folder of programming source files and so a couple hundred thousand small files and that still takes forever for some reason. Is there a way to speed that up?

Hi! I know, by now this video is kinda ancient.. But maybe you can help me out: I have an old TB Display hooked up to an SSD rack, wich is connected to my Mac Pro. Now every now and then, the Pro has to render footage, which take a few hours. Meanwhile I would love to be able, to hook up my Macbook to the Mac Pro and access its connection to the rack and display. Before I buy the necessary cables - would that work?

This method does not work on the new OSX. If you are still trying to connect, do this. Go to sharing window under settings after getting the somewhat connected on thunderbolt and have your file sharing selected, on the right side of the window, it will show you the smb://"what ever your number is" to connect. So enter that instead of your IP address.

So I plan on transferring date such as documents and pictures from a 2012 MacBook Pro to the latest MacBook Pro using the thunderbolt method.. As far as transferring ALL my pictures, would you say that this is the easiest and fastest way to do it without any complications? I just don't want to lose all my pictures and documents. Also, once all the pictures are transferred to the new Mac, I'll be able to view them all normally from the Photos App on the new Mac, right? (Stupid question) Thanks.

Can you do the same thing if one of your Mac's does not have a USB-C port ? I.E. one has USB-c and the other Mac has older version of Thunderbolt port. Assuming you can get the appropriate cable of course.

You used the weak ports on the right side of one. You should get better speeds with the ports on the left or with a 15" model.

MacBook Pro 2016 models vary slightly in the data speeds they provide to each Thunderbolt 3 port. The MacBook Pro 15-inch, 2016 delivers full Thunderbolt 3 performance on all four ports. The 13-inch, 2016 with four Thunderbolt 3 Ports supports Thunderbolt 3 at full performance using the two left-hand ports. The two right-hand ports deliver Thunderbolt 3 functionality, but have reduced PCI Express bandwidth.

I have a 2012 Macbook Air and just bought a new MacBook Pro. I want to get some software like MS Office that I purchased from the Air to the Pro. Will this work or does it only do files? Any suggestions? Thanks

You'd have to use a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt adapter which is like $30 and then buy a Thunderbolt male to male adapter which is idk, based on where you buy it from. All the best with that spending

You should really use manual IP settings not the self assigned stuff. "handshake" should be way faster that way.

I'm trying to use the power Thunderbold cable that came with the Mac to connect two MacBooks. Is that no good? When I follow the instructions, the status on both Macs do not change to self-assigned ip, it just stays red and saying not connected.

The charge cable is basically a USB-2.0 cable, not a Thunderbolt-3 cable. The Thunderbolt-3 cables are more expensive, and faster :-)

did the same with "regular" usb-c 3.1 and transfer speed was around 200MB/s iMac 2017 to Macbook Pro 2018 [both thumbs up]
