When I was a kid in rural Michigan, we had a doberman pincher- never docked her tail or cropped her ears- she looked like a sweet hound dog! ❤ Anyway, I'd point and say "get it, Spice!" She'd leap up high on her tall legs, graceful like a gazelle on the Serengeti, and then pounce on the mole hole! The dirt would fly and you could hear her snort breathe in the mole hole lol! She caught more moles than we could count! We sure had had a whole lotta holes though! 😂 Had to fill those in, but, man, she loved her job. 👍❤😂

Good Simple Living And Homesteading yes, coyotes get killed. It can be very dangerous trying to release them. Your own dog will bite you if you don’t know what you’re doing. We have moles. They are part of the ecosystem. Including, but not limited to, helping to loosen and aerate the soil and they eat grubs that would otherwise grow into adults that eat your plants, So they are not a "problem". but simply something to manage, because they mostly are a benefit, long term. And there are plenty of non-lethal ways to keep them out of your vegetables if you simply wanted to take the time and effort to implement them..
@GoodSimpleLiving

@@zapyawhereithurts Glad to see you are also interested in non-leathal control of moles. My "great idea" was simply to point out there were non-leathal options out there, and people might want to learn about "them". 😀 Google search is a good place to start of course. I did not mention any one in particular because different methods may not work well for some people, and I think people should do enough research to find the option that works best for them. Hope this helps.

Two points just for thought. 1: put the dead mole back in the hole. If you don't you have put up a sign free new home to your next mole. 2: a 15 minute road flare lit and placed in the tunnel then covered with dirt and sod gets the babies and the other parent. I'm also in Eastern NC where our soil is super sandy so building up a bridge for a trap is next to impossible unless I maybe wet some of the sandy soil to build it up? Also, do I need to find their main entry point or is anywhere along the path okay? Also, is it normally just one mole or multiple moles? Sorry for so many questions. I'm in my mid 40s so experiencing moles for the first time has me baffled. I've had chickens for 2 years and just recently started noticing the raise ground that is smooshy and I'm not even cool with moles. I have to get rid of those suckers.

@10.50 you say you read online and didn 't know if it is true, let's us bust the myth. It would be impossible for a Mole to stay still for 24 hours as it would starve to death. It needs to eat 50 to 70% of it's body weight over 3 active periods a day. For me in the same situation would need to eat 35kg of beef in 3 x 11.6kg sessions. So if that is what my metabolism needed, how long would I survive if nutrient was witheld?

Outstanding video! Great tips on moles and birds. I’ve been researching beneficial nematodes that target the grubs. No grubs= no moles so they say. You’d likely enjoy the way nematodes work, much like that movie “Aliens”. However you’ve already stated that fleas are not an issue on your land. That means you already have a good population of beneficial nematodes. There are three main types though and one goes after fleas another type hunts deeper for grubs. Beautiful farm btw, be safe.

We had a terrible problem with moles when we moved to our property until we used beneficial nematodes. We apply them in the spring and fall and the results have been nothing short of amazing.

Have you noticed a decrease in worms?

@@GoodSimpleLiving We have actually seen an increase in worms and lady bugs etc as they do not affect the "beneficial" bugs. The soil is thriving as are our plants/fruit trees. We had a terrible grub problem that moles loved and now we have not seen any evidence of moles in some time.

I really dislike moles! They are cute, but boy are they destructive.
