I've always used marshmallows in a dog proof, they can't resist & they're cheap and readily available.

I believe this. Set up my first 2 dp yesterday and woke up with a coon in one this morning. I didn't realize they like marshmallows so much. I used maple syrup as the lure. 3 marshmallows and a squirt a lot cheaper than store bought baits.

Yes, raccoon meat is edible. It has a rich grassy taste that is compared to turkey or chicken but with more fat content. Raccoon meat is one the most tender meat found on the market and once cooked correctly, it can be a delicacy. Raw raccoon meat is very hard to chew and not recommended to eat.

Do you dispatch the coons on the trap? I'm very new to trapping and am finding if blood gets on the trap I don't catch again for a few days or move the trap and clean it. I'm trying to be more efficient. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes. I don't move or clean the blood off as it doesn't make any difference with catch rates.

Well my skunk experience...you have to deal with the spray BUT you don't get sprayed. I soaked a old ratty comforter in water. Held it up, walked it over to Mr. Skunk as he sprayed, tossed the wet comforter over Mr. Skunk and you can dispatch how you choose!

I've been trapping probably longer than you've been alive sir. Lol. Go hard at it now because Father time catches us all !! Good luck to you. One question....I've been using your same methods with trail trapping with dps and before that bodygrip. My question is this. While the corn is standing the trails are deadly, but after it is harvested they fall off quickly. Do you confirm my observation ?? Seems like the night after harvest they really hit the fields but by the time the ,for lack of a better term, smell of the harvested corn goes away my trails to the corn go dead. Just wondered your thoughts. Have a great season.
@IronTrailTraplineSupply

If the trail is solely used for just going to feed in and back they seem to be pretty short lived. Once it's tilled under it's pretty much useless. It seems like where they have a strong population than here the catch rate will hold up longer. That's why I like setting travel ways with multiple different attractions I play, the trail doesn't just seem to go dead after harvest.

As a hunter myself, I have used this trap to catch 2 coons. May not seem much, but I will not use this particular trap ever again. First, the argument of it being dogproof is basically a non-argument. A cage may accidentally catch a dog, but you can simply release them with no harm done. Plus, cats or squirrels can also trigger the mechanism easily. Secondly, raccoons are tactile creatures, so their paws are extremely sensitive. You just have to use a stick to see the damage this trap does. One raccoon I trapped with it managed to pull out just enough, so it barely stayed trapped by a joint. It lay there convulsing. Make no mistake, this trap will put these animals in a lot of pain. Cages to the same trick and cause no harm. Also, mass-hunting raccoons in an attempt to control numbers is a vain effort. The proper term here is compensatory fertility. Studies have shown clearly that raccoons procreated disproportionately more in areas where they are hunted intensely as opposed to sanctuaries.
Yes, we had a family friend die a horrible death from it. I was vaccinated for it years ago and plan on getting boosters this summer.
