I cannot emphasize enough to the younger generation the importance of sunblock. I never used it. No one in my generation did. People loved tanning back in the day - I remember some girls using baby oil on their skin to really cook. We were crazy! My melasma appeared gradually for a few years and then all at once after an otherwise awesome trip to Maui. I do use retinol daily and I used to use hydroquinone, too, but I was instructed to take a required break and I am now going to start using a cream with daisy extract and licorice root extract. I hope it works. The hydroquinone sure did but apparently it’s unsafe to use forever. I wish anyone suffering from this affliction the best of luck. Melasma is rough.

Licquorice extract is great but isnt enough to battle melasma. Think melasma is on your skin multifactorial you need 3 or more of the following key ingredient- 1 anti inflammatory 2 antioxidant 3 exfoliants 4 melanin inhibitors 5 retinoids. I would advice to get a moisturizer with anti inflammatory such as niacinamide, liquorice, centella, etc. 1 exfoliante- kojic, mandelic, lactic or glycolic for instance to use once a week and then a morning serum with anti oxidants like vit c, gluthatione or resveratrol. Finally i would opt for either a retinol serum for the night or a melanin inhibitor such as tranexamic, aloha arbutin, kojic acid. I hope this comes handy

When you are in the US I recommend Marie France kojic acid soap. You have to build up slowly. Only leave it on your skin for 10 seconds the first time until you can go longer. After years my skin can tolerate minutes (only around the eyes shorter) and this with glycolic acid and vitamin C keeps my skin good. The patches became very light. Melasma is daily work.

I have had melasma for twenty plus years and for me, skinceuticals ce ferulic,Obagi blender,retin a and upf hats and face coverings especially when I go running are what works. The type of sunscreen we wear also makes a difference I love color science upf 50 color tint it adds great coverage too and seems the best at not sweating off. I will say when I don’t get enough sleep and or am dealing with pms symptoms it tends to flare up but only temporary. I think paying attention to your hormones and nutrition are also important like lifting weights and getting enough minerals and not too much alcohol. I agree it has to be a combo of things not just one and accepting it may never go away but with melasma just as quickly as it can flare up, you can make it go down-you just have to be committed on all levels. ❤

What many dermatologists don't emphasize enough is that you MUST reapply 50 SPF sunscreen EVERY 2 HOURS on your face where It's being treated with those treatments and even when the dark spots were gone you still need to reapply sunscreen for every 2 hours for every single day, otherwise your melasma will come back worse than ever, especially for darker tone skin

In one of his videos he said knotweed extract helps to prevent the damage of infrared light. I asked him if we can use that together with infrared when having such problems. Maybe then we can use infrared for building up more collagen.

I've seen conflicting opinions on the use of at home radio frequency devices like nebulyft if you have mild melasma. Is there a clear answer to this one way or another?

Is it ok to use a red light therapy mask or would it make it worse?
@LindaKayHolevas
Жыл бұрын
It made mine a lot worse. I had been doing a melasma treatment for close to nine months & then I started using a red light mask. After only about 3 weeks, I realized it not only made my current melasma worse, I got so much more! I wasted 9 month of treatment in just a few weeks. This is my story, but I wish somebody had told me this prior to me spending $200 on a red light mask.

For me the NIR infrared made it worse but when I turned it off it helped with just the red light. I still use NIR on my neck though.

Can one use redlight infrared light mask or panels despite having sunspots, agining spots or melasma when one uses the same time on the affected areas knotweed extract? I remember you have once said that knotweed extract prevents the harmful effects of infrared light.

i am italian/olive complected/ fitzpatrick 3. the only fair/blonde person i ever saw with melasma is china phillips of wilson phillips. i got melasma because i took birth control to control acne until i was 50. i have had melasma since 1995. i did 3 IPL treatments & got rid of it, but i forgot sunscreen one day & it came back. at this point my entire face has melasma & have the traditional darker patches. i did 2 pico sure laser treatments 18 months ago to knock it down, then vitamin C for a year to where it is manageable. i did a vi peel 2 weeks ago and may need another. dr v rattan on yt said even opening an oven can impact it . i use blue light blocking screens. i just found i am hypo thyroid that i knew i had for 30 years. im seeing an endocrinologist this month. also have adrenal issues i have been using Altrena retin a & skinmedica lytera since January

I am on Np Thyroid medication and I'm having side-effects! I developed melasma on the backs of my hands! It happened seemingly overnight! I'm also experiencing hair loss. My doctor did a complete thyroid panel a month ago and everything was "normal", yet I'm having these issues. Help!
@dechengyalmo09

Change to natural thyroid extract and use all co factors that the thyroid needs for its proper function. Jod only use in the form of kelp and just if your thyroid is not inflamed. Put some bioidentical progesterone creme on your thyreoid, but make a hormone testing before! This will also help you to grow your thyroid back. Mine has grown already back from 2,5 ml to 8 ml. From 9 ml onwards the thyroid can manage without hormone intake just with enough Jod.Stay away from Gluten, Fluoride, change to low carb or at best to paleo diet and lifestyle. Fix your gut issues with a professional naturopath

While getting a biopsy on my ear I asked the dermatologist in passing what I could do about a slight brown spot on my temple from an old zit, and he took a scalpel and cut it out like a bruise on an apple, leaving a jagged, recessed, purple scar that looks ten times worse that the original spot. That was two years ago, and I cringe whenever I see how he disfigured my face for no reason.

My dermatologist says shes never seen melasma in the places on my face it currently is affecting. Nothing has worked as its on the dermis layers. Hydroquinone or any bleaching products don't work neither does vitamin C. Can't even be covered with make up. Most videos i see are treating the epidermis layers. I wonder if anyone has had success in treating dermis layer melasma.
